Scrapping e-tolls: Don't hold your breath

I'm happy with the 100% etoll discount thanks.

Tiyani Rikhotso, spokesperson of the National Department of Transport, emphasised that Makhura would be focusing on the impact of e-tolls only. He said the current e-toll system will remain and the only debate is about whether it is still the correct mechanism for further phases of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP).

Keep the tolls, lose Gauteng. Your move ANC.

That's a bit of a stretch...
Then explain why ANC accept possibility of abandoning further projects, and also scrapping projects in Natal, but not in Gauteng? Reason is: Gautrain is in Gauteng, Gautrain is the reason.

Gold Reef City is in Gauteng, do you think that could be the reason?

Or because they already spent the cash and signed contracts for Gauteng and not elsewhere?

You'd make a truly terrible scientist. Correlation does not equal causation.

What's more likely is that a third of the country's GDP comes from Gauteng with massive daily commuting and little alternative for its population. If it was just the Gautrain, then they'd surely only toll the N1 section linking Pretoria and Johannesburg? You know, that section where the Gautrain actually runs?

Apply your mind...

If they keep the existing e-tolls and implement an additional fuel levy, then some people will be paying double for the same stretch of road. How do they expect people to simply accept this?

It is cheaper to scrap it than paying every month maintenance fees to the overseas supplier at wrong exchange rate. It had been discussed already, it is a fact. I don't comment on your personal remarks, not surprising reaction if you have large amount of money coming from Gautrain.

Maintenance is done locally by in-house staff or by third party companies. The money going out of country is for the cost of hardware and installation and whatnot.

Isn't Gautrain running at a loss?

I wonder what the latest is now with creating eToll lanes at kzn tolls.

Reason for eTolling is Gautrain.

OK, I'll be the cynic and put it to you that the reason for the eToll is in Gauteng is because we have the busiest highways and therefor higher possible income from them. And the reason they don't want to make more money by using a fuel levy country wide (or even just in the province) is because the money they receive from the fuel levy will most likely be way more difficult to "steal" than money paid into a SANRAL account.
