Screamer WiMax

Does anyone know what WiMAX version and which vendor's equipment these guys are using?

Looking at the equipment next to me, it is Alvarion.

... and by the way my Screamer connection has been perfect for the last week. No more disconnects and the bandwidth/speed is great even at peak times :D

I don't recall the exact cost for the indoor and outdoor unit but think it was approx R2700. I authenticate using PPPoE into their network.

Found this for you:

INSTALLATION
Once off rental fee WiMAX R 2,450.00; OR
24 Month rental fee WiMAX R 210.00

These prices no longer say WiMAX but they seem to match my packaged costs (for capped as there are uncapped prices as well)
MONTHLY
40 MB R 39.00
500 MB R 143.00
1 GB R 190.00
3 GB R 420.00
5 GB R 570.00
10 GB R 1,025.00

SPEED
They allow you to select any speed up to 1mbps on the capped service. Uncapped has additional cost (as you would expect) as the speeds get higher.

802.16d is the fixed version of WiMax whilst 802.16e offers mobility. I would assume it's the d version being deployed.
Anyone know more about the latencey cheating?

Can i use my own ISP, or do I need to select on of there GB Packages? I just want a network I can dial into using PPPoE... Phoned them and the lady on the phone wasn't really of any help...

Please elaborate on the "latency cheating" comment as it is a new term to me:confused:

Hi Fanix
We currently do not allow any other broadband suppliers to supply broadband across our network.

Getting about 130ms locally (measured to Speedtest.net's Jhb server). I have been told by Screamer that they spend the first few days after installation fine tuning the connection and that I can expect a significant improvement.

Disconnects are starting to annoy me .... trying to be understanding .....

How is the connection now and the latencies(local)?

My connection has been incredibly stably (one or two disconnects in the last 2 weeks) since they removed the intermidiate links between Bryanston and Pretoria - they raised the mast/tower etc in Pretoria.

Latency is pretty good - 50ms approx to the end of the Screamer network and from that point onwards you are in the hands of Telkom.

With Neotel and MTN joining trenching for new fibre cable (laying their own cables in the trenches) we will have some interesting options when Seacom comes online :D

Just got my Screamer Wimax installed, so I thought I'd give my first impressions.

Installation was really quick and the technician very clued up. Physical setup took maybe 2 hours, which included some hiding indoors due to lightning... Luckily I'm fairly close to the tower.

Just did a speedtest to JHB with ff:
ping 110 ms
d/l 549 kbps
u/l 213 kbps
Interesting though is that speedtest.net says my ISP is Telkom SA??? Not sure how accurate the ISP identification is in general.

Technician told me that Screamer will be switching to some new backbone in the next 2 weeks or so, which will apparently improve speed.

So far pretty satisfied with service. Will have to see over time how reliable the connection though. And hope their bandwith prices drop soon - R190 for 1GB is pretty hard.

Anybody else experience high international latency on some evenings (around 7-10pm)?

As of now ....

Summary
It is clear to me that Screamer do not have enough capacity for peak times as this situation will normalise around 22:30-23:00.

edit: Latency improved within 30 mins of posting this - back down to +- 250ms.

Your ping is a bit high, but from what I understand, they will still "optimize" your connection...

Yeah, R190/gig is still a bit high... :(

Had a chat to Screamer yesterday/today regarding this issue.

Basically:
* Their capacity is more than adequate (50% max utilisation on backhaul tm) according to the person I spoke to.
* They have raised a ticket with their backhaul provider regarding the high international pings that we are seeing some evenings.

So .... lets wait and see but everything else is running perfectly. I am impressed ;)
