Screamer WiMax

Hate to say this but I experienced these problems with Screamer for over a year. The fundamental issue has always been inconsistency - primarily due to resets (anyone recall my workaround?) and lost packets. High pings can be managed but dropped connections and lost packets are a far bigger problem.

Don't hold your breath as Screamer knows the problem exists and are unable to fix it (or spend the money it takes to fix the problem).

Screamer should do everyone a favour and state that they don't plan to support gaming type connections (and other packet/ping sensitive applications). This way they would manage expectations and everyone would know what they are signing up for. For example: I don't mind Screamer's connection now that I use it primarily for browsing (which accounts for the majority of their users).

I agree, if they advertise their service correctly then it would be fair, but don't advertise it as broadband when that isn't what you offer...

Agreed with both you and "wow4life". The thing that gets to me the most is the fact that numerous amounts of people experience the same issues and it gets swept under the carpet. I would love to hear "howzit's" perspective on their current blight or should i rather say, ongoing blight ?

Does anyone know why they removed the CPE rental option? And will they add it again in the future?

I don't often take the time to read these forums but can't understand why Screamer does not fix the connections for the clients that are posting here.
My latest WOW update (today) of 81.9Mbs took 17 mins to download and my WOW gaming is fine except in a raid or dungeon with a lot of activity which then seems to lag but I think that is more with Blizzard than with the connection.
C'mon Screamer you are not doing yourself any favours with these unhappy clients.

That's actually not bad, 82 MB in 17 min equates to about 70 or 80 kB/s download speed! What your secret?

Problem at the moment is the amount of unacceptable packet loss on their network. Its a definite killer for WoW raiding.

If I am raiding and alt-tab and go browse sites, my whole connection just dies as well, and only recovers after 30 sec or so.

raided last night was a tad better. was able to finish off second wing in ICC :D

the wow update downloaded for me @ about 100 kB/s so was happy about that :D

No problems here...

Hi Guys! I'm sorry to hear about all your trouble with Screamer (and I'm not bragging here), but I must say I've been extremely happy with my Wimax (1Mbps) connection.

I'm in Centurion close to a tower and have full signal, so that might be the reason for my good connection.

Speeds are mostly constant (had the odd slow-down) but this is what I get on speedtest:

I've also played COD4 (FPS) online a lot lately, and get latencies of 60 to 70 ms to local servers. Friends with ADSL connections get latencies of 40 to 60, so no real difference there. I don't play any games on international servers, so I can't really comment on that.

Don't know what is going on but for the past two days I cannot upload anything via FTP. Not updating websites today

MacSkaaP, nice to hear someone getting good Wimax, though many of us still experiencing problems :(

Hi Guys... sorry about this... but I'm off to TELKOM... I have never thought I would be glad to say this... better the devil you know.

I privately installed my Telkom Line... as there were no lines in our complex and is seemed like it would only happen 20 years from now...

I probably will have to wait a while for the telkom adsl activation but my line is working so thats good news. As soon as the ADSL Modem lights up I will send in my resignation to Wimax seeing that I am paying to be treated like an employee who is worthless...

Well... I had to confirm that the Piping was done in the complex.. if so next step would be to arrange equipment to ensure the pipe is clear. Then get the copper wire from telkom (that was more luck than anything else) worked with a person at Alberton Telkom Planning who was very helpful and arranged me some excess cable from a nearby installation. Pulled the cable through. Contacted Planning section to come and connect it. After the connection they release the order and the telkom guy comes to finish the installation in your house + the telkom box.

The problem is not with the connection to the tower i.e. it occurs either at the boundary to the upstream provider or within the upstream provider.

Does anyone have any kind of update on whats happening with the connection problems and alleged measures being taken to improve bandwidth?
