Apart from the obvious "X is better than Y", I was hoping someone could provide some insight into this.

Are there limits to what humans can perceive in terms of numbers of colours? If so, do the sizes of the pixels and the size of the actual display play a role in determining this?

I see a lot of phones these days that are relatively "high end" with only 65 K colour displays. How noticeable would you say this is compared to a 16 M colour display?

The 65k and 16 million thing is just marketing. My Blackberry Bold has 65k and the display of colour would blow you away (I've seen many sucky 256k and 16 million screens). More important is resolution, eg. 320x240 is the standard for middle end phones, the higher the resolution the better.

I think it's manufacturer dependant, eg. Nokia need you to believe that the new version of your phone is better so they say 256k and 16 million, etc. We're not talking about 16 and 32 bit colour, this is unrelated to that.

It has everything to do with 16 bit vs 32 bit:
3 colours @ 6 bits each = 18 bits per pixel = 262 144 colours
3 colours @ 8 bits each = 24 bits per pixel = 16 777 216 colours.

I'm asking more about what the PERCEIVABLE difference is.

None. If you have a high enough resolution. I've had a 264k screen on my last phone and my new one is 64k. There's no contest - the bold is better because of the higher resolution.
