Hi,

Just a quick question, hope someone can give me a answer...

Some people, sell SDSL connections privately. A SDSL Modem on each side, operating on insanely fast speeds (naturally), using a point-to-point copper link supplied by Telkom (Analog Leased Lines, as the old terms have it).

Can anyone perhaps let me know exactly what kind of line is required from Telkom from this? Is this a DataTel (Analogue Leased Line), 2-Wire / 4-Wire / Special Quality line? Is it a normal outdoor extension line?

I've heard that Telkom sometimes put coils on Analogue Leased lines which makes it difficult to impossible to put SDSL on it, and hence, I'm asking...

Naturally I can understand the distance limitations and all those things... But for a quick few kilometers... What is required?

Thanks,

Hi Savage. I have tried getting SDSL going over a old 128 leased line in the past. The guys at billion had some demo sdsl modems. I could not get it going.

Yes, it won't operate on Diginet lines - obviously... Analogue Leased Lines / Outdoor extensions are completely different technology (they are "supposed" to be direct lines, not plugged into anything in the exchange). Diginet is not end-to-end, Diginet terminates on equipment inside the local exchange...

I realize. i do not think a analogue line/extension will work either. I do not know if you have ever seen one of the always on Voice lines brokerage firms use, that is a direct copper line and it is a seperate product from Telkom. possibly it will work on one of those lines!

If the line only goes through a single exchange you may get lucky and they won't put it through a PCM, and then SDSL will work. More than one exchange and you're out of luck.

We ran this setup about 10 years back, and it worked perfectly at 2mbit/sec.

Thanks Jay.

So in telkom terms, what is ordered?

DataTel (Analogue Leased Line)?

1 Pair, 1 Pair Special Quality, or 2 Pair?? Will be really interesting if you can get it to run on 2 Pair and have 2 x 2MB on 1 Line :P

These lines are so cheap, I'm really wanting to give it a try. But turn arround times at Telkom -shrugs- I'd want to be pretty sure I order the right thing...

We used to order an "outdoor extension". Sometimes it appeared on their system as a Datel service though. It was always 2 wire, and we used Tainet SDSL modems.

We had an arrangement with the Telkom line installer to make sure it didn't go through a PCM. I used to work for a "mon 'n pop" ISP way back then, and we were lucky enough to have the same Telkom dude install all our lines.
