SEACOM bandwidth testing

webafrica giving away 10GB for a trial of their new network (which apparently will be making use of seacom) could be a good indication of price drops. Not many companies can afford that kind of trial on telkom prices.

Although I have no idea how big their trial base will be tho.

Serious, how do I get on it?

Didnt telkom drop the prices of SAT3 a while ago to counter seacom?

Wouldnt those savings be immediate to the ISPs?

those savings are immediate but ISPs are still greedy, either way, why are we still hearing these "its still coming" or "not gonna happen soon" stories??? its as if someone is worried we will forget aboiut seacom.

This is part of what I was hoping for. Let's continue hoping we see some of it BEFORE the year's end. Logically it is not in the interests of the providers to delay when they could be selling more of a cheaper product. And if Telkom comes through in October, then things are going to get very competitive! :D

Oh my word, IF??!??!?!

:D:D:D

I think IS may be using seacom already because youtube video's stream one time where as saix does not.

Also it is all good and well testing Seacom but if pricing does not drop dramatically whats the point?

:erm: MTN & Vodacom should also have direct access to Seacom. Wonder when they will come to the party.

Vodacom has access through gateway Communications if I am not mistaken. Not certain about MTN: They are a big EASSy investor.

Their probably just riding the higher rate wave as long as they can ;)

Axxess has been integrating seacom into its testing,my gaming pings intl. have been dropping steadily for the last 2 months, the 384line had 700ms,now at around 350ms ;)

Hmmm They must be getting their bandwidth from IS, I am not sure which of the
smaller ISP ie Webafrica, SA Gateway,Axxess will have enough cash to purchase
direct from Seacom and still foot the Telkom IPconnect bill to distribute it to
the "last mile" to the ADSL subscriber

YouTube is cached locally and networks with certain private peering arrangements will see the faster access to this content.

That is a common consumer complaint... but the simple fact is that it does not make good business sense. If you can undercut your competitors and sign up more customers, you would be crazy not to do that. The reality was that they have had their hands tied up until now with extremely small profit margins. Ask any ISP provider, they are not exactly milking the cash cow.

"Good news for students and lecturers is that all TENET institutions will receive SEACOM bandwidth"

Blah blah blah, we'll talk about good news when The University Of Pretoria's IT Department stop charging students a ridiculous R1 / MB and give the students real internet, not just port HTTP.

UP's internet is such a joke that communication engineering students actually have to get internet from other sources to properly conduct projects and research.
