Oom Battle

Please move this post if you think it is posted incorrectly.

After all the dubiousness in the forums I decided to be pro-active.

I have been following up the story about the SEACOM landing at Mtunzini.

Contacted the journos at Zululand Observer for more background and to see what the story on the ground there is.

Very kind switched on people send me some images and pdf of the story on it's way.

They have had an ongoing conversation with the good people at SEACOM and provided me with a contact at SEACOM.

Here comes the "kicker"

I sent the contact some email ( I don't know where they are -- USA , INDIA , Mauritius NOT SA  ) TEN MINUTES later someone from SEACOM is on the phone to me -- TEN MINUTES :eek::eek:

WHERE the *(*&^*^%*&(&% have you ever seen service like that in SA -- WHERE --

Not only that , the person that spoke to me was lucid , informed , professional and intelligent.

SEACOM in my books you are the next closest to the BIG man in the sky. PLEASE buy out TELKOM ;):D

Okay, but what feedback have you received? What were you inquiring about?

Sharing is caring! :D

Please bankrupt Telkom and send the company to the deepest dungeons of hell so that us ordinary honest paying citizens of South Africa may forever whipe the name "Telkom" from the face of this planet's history and live a happily ever after life with our new love, Neotel. Oh, and may Neotel never be corrupted by the same inscrutiny that shall cause the eventual downfall of the evil Telkom empire.
Amen.

Interesting MW, thanks :) Can't wait to see some proper service around here

SHARING

OK

This was along the lines of a private request for more detailed info.

Will just have to ask first if OK to post.

Stuff does have copyright.

YES it DID happen. I do have images as well as article -- might even go and have a look see for myself and get some of my own. :)

the EMBARGOED one

Thanks but not to sound critical however where is the proof?

Thanks but not to sound critical however where is the proof?

Oh yea of little faith.

All will be revealed.

I am merely the one that carries the "cleft-stick" ;):D

the INCONSEQUENTIAL one

I thought Neotel was going to be handling everything to do with the SEACOM cable in South Africa.

If so what does it matter how organised SEACOM is when those wanting to get space on the new cable are going to have to deal with Neotel?

Applicant: "Hi there I'm calling from *INSERT_ISP_HERE* and was wondering about the progress of my application for bandwidth on the SEACOM cable?"

Call centre operator: "What is bandwidth?"

Applicant: "Nevermind, I have a reference number here, perhaps that will help, it is #####"

Call centre operator: "I'm sorry that reference number seems to be invalid, you'll need to make a new application"

Applicant: "But it took me 2 years to get to this point with you guys, I've filled out 86 forms and provided DNA samples 5 times already"

Call centre operator: "I'm sorry we have no record of any of that, would you like to try Neoflex?"

Applicant: *click*

I love the smell of progress in the morning.

(apologies for the rant I've spent the morning talking to Virgin Mobile)

Patience

I identify and sympathise with you.

I can only speak of MY experience.

Who has what hold over Who ????? That I cannot tell you

All I know is that my invitation to attend the launch of the cable in Mtunzini will be coming from SEACOM.

the FORTUNATE one :cool::D

the INCONSEQUENTIAL one

Sorry but been having faith in telecommunications in SA for too long now;)

I'll believe it when the products are here

(apologies for the rant I've spent the morning talking to Virgin Mobile)

Oh don't get me started on Virgin Mobile!!!! They are USELESS and PATHETIC and for some reason my phone is locked on the Cell C/Virgin network and I can't unblock my phone so that I can insert a Vodacom sim!!! It seems that all the telecom operators that were going to be the "saviours" (read Virgin/Neotel) of the South African people are turning out to be the worst of them all!!! I would LOVE for Seacom or even Zain to come and show us what they've got. Why can't Seacom run their own broadband operating network in SA?

I must admit though, rants aside, that even if Neotel are going to be handling SEACOM in SA, it is good to note that there is a transparent and dedicated company behind it. If MidnightWizard's interaction with SEACOM is anything to go by I doubt that they would allow Neotel to screw up SEACOMs move into South Africa, and if Neotel did start screwing it up, it seems to me that the SEACOM boys would step in pretty quickly to rectify the situation.

Update

"WikiLeaks"

Perhaps they need their OWN Wiki Blog.

Their Website is quite some way behind schedule -- not sure WHY it is not being updated.:(

BUT - I CAN report that the cable IS still there. :)

Was in Mtunzini yesterday and went to have a look at the site and take some photos as well as capturing some GPS routing.

Waiting for permission to release.

Saw and touched the real McCoy SEACOM cable and spoke to the splicer.

The cable and power housing structures are in place and apparently populated.
The office block is still under construction.
There is a lot of work still to be done on storm water drains and culverts.

Things are on the move there but still a lot of work to be done. Construction is not yet finished and no one is on site except for the construction workers.

Apparently the site commissioning will be done on the 16th June ( SOWETO Day )

The onward laying of the cable is being done in quite a unique way.

IF anyone wants to look it up on GE here are the co-ords
