Seacom landing impasse

"Communications director general Lyndall Shope-Mafole told ITWeb that this local ownership requirement was for security purposes and to stimulate SA's economic development."

Yet another South African politician who doesn't know what they are talking about put into a position they don't fully understand simply because they have the right skin colour.

It's been 13 years, the only thing affirmative action is achieving now is making sure that political correctness triumphs over actually getting the job done. I am in no way being racist, I am merely stating that if we want to make it anywhere in the future, we need to start employing people based on merit.

But who's going to protect us from her.....?

Pardon the pun, but this is something of a DoC pipe dream... How are they going to control who *owns* the cable when most of its length lies in international waters and only the last 12 nautical miles are inside the national borders? Does the ownership restriction apply to the whole cable along its entire length? Or just the last bit? Stupid in the case of the former, and pointless in the case of the latter...

No, Lyndall is something special. She's the real poison pill in the DoC and I quite firmly believe she wields the true power in the department. Forget Ivy: Lyndall is far, far worse.

I think that they are refering to which ISP it "first" connects to... any one want to guess?? first 2 do not count!! :(

Shope-Mafole.
She has a MSc in Telecommunications Engineering from the ‘Jose Antonio Echeverria’ Higher Institute of Technology (ISPJAE) in Havana, Cuba in 1983. :)

She also was Jay Naidoo's advisor. btw, he was the guy that extended TELKOM's monopoly and got into bed with SBC/Thintana.

Her deceased hubby was also Foreign Affair DG or something like that. All together now, ne po ti zzzmmmm.
She is now apparently involved with Dr Henry Chasia, the guy that drafted the NEPAD protocol that is at the center of the EASSY debacle.

Seems she also won the 'African ICT Lifetime Achievement Award', for what exactly is a mystery to me at this stage, maybe for looking busy while doing nothing. Tokenism.

Rumor has it she does a not so good surf report as well predicting tsunamis on the highveld.

She was also personally responsible for getting the council of provinces to condone government interference in the selection of ICASA councilors...

I don't think she wants the job. She's happy to let Ivy (and previously Jay) take the blame for her strategies... She's a VERY clever, devious girl.

in other words they (the gov) can't control it and/or wants a slice of the pie/gravy

Can't we just go back to the good old days where instead of having to sell an interest of their business to overly dictatorial third world governments, the big corporations could just pay bribes.... hmmm.
