SEACOM testing starts

Okay, cool. I was hoping for a yes answer, but thanks anyway.;)

If the latency of the bandwidth is lower, then the page will start loading faster, but we are talking in milli seconds here

We still have to wait a month or so. :( I'm so hyped about this, a month seems like a year!

i would advise that you keep away from the timelines, most likely would be the longest month ever known to man...

oh good. another thread about seacom without any real facts

If you see a seacom thread look away.

I'm excited about it, many others are, we dont need someone to freak out becuase it is just another thread.

This is positive news. Its great to hear that this cable project is going according to schedule. I am tired of speculating and hearing about whether prices are going down, caps going up etc etc. Until this cable is live and ISP/Companies are connected to it, there is no way of knowing.

We all have been continuously disappointed/screwed by the telecoms market and are used to expecting the worst.

All im saying is, thus far, things have gone according to plan with Seacom. We have about a month to go before we live (yippy!). Lets wait and see what new packages/price changes are going to be available in the next month or two.

To quote the article:

" 'Plentiful and readily available bandwidth will result in lower telecommunications costs' says SEACOM"

However our South African ISPs are saying:

"Nah... the cost reductions won't be that much, if at all, because of [insert pathetic excuse here]"

Won't someone just please lay a cable from Swaziland or something so we can get cheap international bandwidth (from SEACOM).

There won't be any major change, if any, as the ISPs still need to get their money back for investing in infrastructure to supply to the man on the street. There will prob. be some half hearted attempt at doing something, however i doubt we will see any real change for at least another 12 months. Most of the available bandwidth will be gobbled up by the new satellite array, in sutherland i think, so for us normal blokes it will be business as usual.

Over the past 18 months, SEACOM has become synonymous with cheaper and faster broadband across the African continent *

“In a little over a month, southern and eastern Africa * will finally get truly connected to international broadband networks. Plentiful and readily available bandwidth will result in lower telecommunications costs and new opportunities across many sectors that will include the call centre and business process outsourcing industries,” said SEACOM.
* = excludes South Africa

I think we (telkom subscribers) will see a small price difference in August when they "review" their prices. I wouldnt hold my breath. I heard talks of the 384 line being discontinued and it will be upgraded to 512 lines. So the slowest lines should be 512kbps.
Cant confirm this ATM.

Just my 2c

sigh .... I smell another disappointment then ... wake me up when we catch up to the rest of the first world.

Telkom DO NOT review prices - they re-adjust prices - decrease some, and increase line rentals across the board, and recover move than the difference lost by the decrease.

yay... not

until seacom slashed my internet bill 6 fold its just another massive lie.

why 6 fold? well simple, our very "lovely" CEO at nevertel said that SAT3 is being charged 6 times more expensive then it should be, so at 6 fold seacom is on par with SAT3 which is all I can hope for (and God please please please please please, after praying for oh sooooooo many times) since this is South Africa.

Average broadband user "More cap please sir" to which telkom says "MORE what is this more you speak of" hehe :D

I just want my cap increased by the end of this year and maybe a some consideration on getting my line upgrade :)

There will be no line speed increase for the home user. Article clearly states that the benefit will go to business. Good for business, not good for local home user. That sucks. We are stil stuck with an up to 4mb (not guaranteed of course) DSL line. I would also like to download and upload at 900 Kbps at a reasonable price.

I can just imagine Telkom and All the ISP's rubbing their hands together and thinking "Boy we're gonna be stinking rich thanks to Seacom" :(

Now if only we had a competent regulator to hold the ISPs feet to the fire to force down prices... but unfortunately we are stuck with IPOOPA who about as useful as aerodynamic fairings on a tractor.
lmao i like that =]

I wouldn't be so optimistic, this is South Africa

dude...asseblief...bliksem Australië toe of iets. Julle klomp negatiewe moere is besig om my nou af te pis!
By reading some of these comments I see that most of the negativity comes from our dear old Cape Town pals.

Funny how the Gauteng guys are all so positive. No wonder we have to carry the rest of the damn country's economy.

Anyways...very excited about this!
