Seagate 7200.11 BSY (not detected in BIOS) error solution

Guess what??? i also have the same problem....

i bought a CA-42 data cable, opened it up and there is no markings to which is the rx and tx cables... any ideas on what to do???

if you got them them the wrong way you gonna no response when you hit cntrol-z (or whatever it is..., cant remember now)

swap them over and try again...

ok will try that... there are 5 wires and ground is indicated so there are 4 wires left to try and figure out...

Vigilantis and your sources are my hero!!! I followed the instructions to the letter and the drive came back beautifully with all the data in place!!!

My hiccups and lessons learned:
I could not find a cheap CA-42 cable so I bought an original Nokia one - It did not work and I could not see it on the comm configuration. (cable was R399 Nokia original)
I eventually managed to find a Chinese CA-42 (R120) ...essentially different to the one in the pics but I managed to find the pinouts for the cable on the net as it did not have any TX , RX and GND markings.
The driver disk that came with the cable was blank, I needed to drive to another dealer to get another copy.
....after that sage, it was all a breeze!!.....

If only there were more like you, try calling CSSI or Intratec, all you need to do when you get there is choose, CUCUMBER or PINEAPPLE, then bend over :wtf:

Where are you situated, as indicated they have the exact cable needed at the Randburg Waterfront flea market, if you'd (and you're too far out) like I'll buy it, ship it to you and you can fix up with me later, pm me.
It costs something like R70.

Keep the other end (cellphone side)of the cable and note what colors go to pin 8 (GND), 7(RX) AND 6(TX) ...then only use those. The pin-outs are counted like this

Be sure the cable (by itself) is auto detected before cutting the cable. My genuine ca-42 cable from Nokia did not detect and did not work. I had to use the Chinese flee-market version

I ve got the same issue, but don't have the time for open HDD surgery. Bricked 1TB need to be fixed ASAP. IF you can fix it I'll pay.

Success as well , recovered my 500Gig!
Used a Nokia CA-45 type cable , so if you can't find a CA-42 or DKU-5 try it.
Connector looks a bit different but it works.

I just fixed my BSY'd ST3500320AS using your guide and recovered 18gig of photographs which i thought were lost for good!
I had an original nokia cable lying around the house from an old phone, it did not work.

Got the blue/black cable form Brightwater for a mere R100.

One thing that was a bit different though was the CA-42 cable that I got, it only had 3 wires, green (GRD), white (RX) and yellow (TX). worked immediately.

I did the whole thing on Windows 7.
If anyone needs a compatible driver for the cable...it's called the "Arkmicro USB-UART controller driver"

Hey vigilantes thx for info,

I have a 1.5TB ST31500341AS that doesn't want to spin up, firmware CC3H, just makes a constant buzzing noise, almost like it cannot initialize the drive. Was part of a FreeAgent Extreme external drive. Gonna try and see if this solution can help. Data not really that important but I am interested to see if this works.

I am near the Randburg waterfront so I will drop by the flea market on Sunday and pick up the cable.

It will work (as far as I know). My Seagate also failed on me and I took another board with the same firmware and it did "came alive" again. But that was only temporary. At the end I had to go the data recovery route.

Best service I received from any company ever, I can highly recommend them.
 
Just a quick question on this fix.... must your drive actually spin up even if it's not detected? If the HDD is only making an intermittent buzzing noise, almost like it is trying to spin-up but can't - this solution can not work, this is what I am assuming after trawling umpteenth forums. Can anybody confirm this?

It should work...... Mine was just making some odd clicking noise and was not detected in the BIOS. Its been a few months now after the fix and its still going strong!
 
Just for info...the buzzing sound was caused by a stuck servo motor...after many tries with the serial connection fix nothing happened so I opened the damn drive and found the noise to come from the servo motor which was stuck solid. A drive with this buzzing sound is better of RMA'd. A did see a video where they use a tool to fix this stuck motor but unfortunately you have to send the drive in for this fix. Hehe well now I know what to do next time....
 
Been trying to fix my drive for two weeks now. Got the cable, the screwdriver, some make shift pin connectors and the time together and tried it last night. Got to the point where I had to connect to the drive via HyperTerminal and then when pressing "ctrl+5" i only get an arrow "->". Did some more research and the then it was either the pins being connected the wrong way or the GDN cable needed to be the V3.3 cable from the USB connector.

The cable swap on the GND connection and did not work... the usb connector got really hot and i think i fried the thing as windows is not recognizing the usb cable after that... I went straight to bed. F***! Back to square one.

BTW, my CA-42 cable has "TXD" and "RXD" in stead of "TX" and "RX" respectively.

Anyone IN CAPE TOWN I can come visit to get this drive fixed? Will pay with many beers!

Hello all the smart people of MyBB <--- Shameless brown nosing is 'cause I need help.

My 1TB 7200.11 died just over a week ago. It's intermittently detectable in the BIOS, SeaTools sees it, and reports that SMART has been activated, but nothing can access it. What should I do? I don't hear any funny noises, and it spins up. If I try to boot from it, I get a Windows error about physical damage or something, so I think the heads are working (why else would it mention Windows).

Is this user fixable? It doesn't sound like the firmware issue cause the BIOS still detects it (mostly). I've got a spare PCB, should I swap them out and try again? What would the [-]****ing[/-] expensive recovery experts do? What is the walk through for HDD recovery?

Oh, I'm willing to pay to have my porn/pirated series/movies/software recovered, but not the prices data recovery places quote.
