Seagate 7200.11 failure

Apparantly there are some real issues with the newer Seagate drives, sizes 500GB and up.
They fail randomly and from what I read you'd be well advised to make backups of all data you have stored on them.

I personally will be replacing mine with Western Digital sooner rather than later.

I almost want to vomit when I hear that name...Western Digital
 
I had an 80GB Seagate fail after 2 years. The 250GB i bought the same time still runs after 4 years. Now I do backups on a 500GB Seagate external.
 
It's the 500GB and 1.5TB drives that are plagued with caching issues.

Got first-hand experience with losing a 500GB.

Now that Seagate is reducing warranty from five to three years, I'll be sticking to Western Digital/Samsung Spinpoint.
 
I dropped Seagate many years ago, and never used them again - am using WD now and to date have not had any failures - any my PC is on 24/7 running 18 WD HDD's...

...my very old DX2-66 PC ( with a top-end 66Mhz CPU! ) is still running its WD 120MB HDD - is a bit louder than today's HDD's, but still runs well - and that's after about 20 years of use! :D

I'm still sitting with a Samsung 1GB drive here that is also a bit loud, but works just fine. :D

Other than that I had 1 WD fail on me, I think, and 0.5 of a Seagate fail on me. I'm not sure anymore, I'm not at home to check out the makes. Other than that I don't have a problem with mine, yet. Bit difficult for me to change to another make just like that, given how reliable my drives have been for me over the years.

We'll just have to get our hands on the retail versions, they still have the full 5 year warranty on them. But I have to agree, bad move from Seagate.

Just spoke to someone at Rectron. they said seagate hard drives in this country will continue to have the full 5yr warranty. Its only in certain parts of the world they are changing to 3yr... Those that are changing offer OEM hard drives. In SA, they dont import OEM hard drives

Can't remember reading that in that article...
 
i lost 5 of my 4x500gb HDD within the first 2 months of buying them... :(
lost my confidence in seagate completely
 
Curse you all, my FUN drive in the file server is a Seagate 7200.11 500GB and it just failed this very minute.

450GB of movies/music/series down the crapper:(

Back to Rectum tomorrow.
