Seagate 7200.11 failure

Curse you all, my FUN drive in the file server is a Seagate 7200.11 500GB and it just failed this very minute.

450GB of movies/music/series down the crapper:(

Back to Rectum tomorrow.

You can't say that we didn't warm you, Indirectly. :p

Eish, that's bad  How old was it?

4 months or so, really pissed off about this.

Why don't Seagate recall them if they're so dodgy?

I really need to buy a new drive sooner rather than later.

As for the recall - Seagate will not admit the problem on their forums and have even deleted some comments they consider too insulting.

Swak dude :(

Same with me. Let us know how it goes swapping it out, I also need to return mine.

I will do, taking it in tomorrow so should have it back middle of next week.

In the last year I've also had about 5 x 250 GB of the same flavour fail as well. Time to move to WD methinks.

Can anyone suggest tools to check which drive it is?

its either my 400gb Seagate that has been left on for weeks at a time.

or my new 1tb Seagate which I've used to move most of my data from my 400Gb drive..and some new extra stuff....

Try MHDD, and be patient.

There's also good ol' SpinRite if you have it. I recently ordered a 1Tb and I specifically requested a WD, just because of all of your experience in this forum with Seagates (my previous favourite). Thanks guys!

I bought a 320gb seagate about 2 years ago thats also giving problems. It crashes the pc every now and then normally only when I write to that drive. After reboot windows always tests that drive for errors on startup. So I know its definately my Seagate.
But I find the sata/power connections on the seagates to be really crappy, cause if I fiddle with the connectors the drive runs perfectly again for a while.

Your drive will not be part of the troubled 7200.11 series but it does look like Seagate are cutting corners somewhere.
From now on I'll stick with Western Digital and Samsung.

Any of you guys doing an effort to keep your drives cool? I have fans on mine, cause they get extremely hot. And something tells me that this prolongs the lifespan. :D

What temps are you running at?
Mine are all inbetween 40° and 45° with a 120mm fan on 3 of them and a Vantec VTX on the Raptor - yet it still sounds like an anvil in gravel when writing or reading from the drive.

I haven't checked the temps, but I work on the "touch temp" and it is a lot cooler since I have added a fan.
