I have been wanting to get into photography as a hobby but the prices of the camera's and equipment are crazy. How good is it to buy second hand equipment.

What I would also like to know is if there are places that buy second hand equipment as well, so that if I start with a basic rig and then want to upgrade I can sell it and buy a better rig as money allows etc. Or if I don't like a particular camera I can sell it or trade it for something I do like etc etc.

What are the best places if there is a market for second hand users.

2nd hand market is always dodgy.

You can try your luck here - I've made several purchases and successful sales.

There are some good deals on the 2nd hand scene - but you do need to know about what you buying. The guy that bought my 400D did have too much of an inkling about DSLRs and that why its easy to get trapped into purchasing something that has seen better days. If thats the case, IMHO, you're better off getting new.

If you do know what your stuff tho, you could buy and then also loose very little when you sell again - comparatively to what you would've lost buying new and then upgrading. Lenses can be had for much less 2nd hand and tend to have a much longer lifespan than the bodies.

Also with 2nd hand online stuff, be weary of scammers. I would prefer buying/selling face2face.

How much are you willing to spend?

Yes this is the Question.

I would rather buy a cam that is a bit lower on the specs but new than risking a 2nd hand purchase from someone I don't know for a couple of more doo daas :D

Thanks for all the advice guys.

Right now I have a budget for this, I am just wanting to get an idea of what to expect when I do decide to take it up. Even if I could afford the top of the range stuff I don't have enough free time so I am putting this on the backburner. Since I am not an expert I think I also need to do a lot of homework.
