Second Hand Honda Civic

Hey guys. Glad I found this thread.

I just sold my 2006 Civic hatch. Great car. Must say though, the drive by wire throttle is noticeable - especially when cruising in 3rd. Small touch of the throttle gives a little bit of a jerk. But the throttle on the whole is so nicely responsive when you want it, and your driving style can adapt to it pretty quickly. Brakes - yip, they go quickly, but you can get brakes from MechArm or one of those that cost HALF as much and last longer. Then take them to a supaquick or someone and they can fit them for you for R50 or so. Wiper blades - you can get Bosch wiper blades, or you can jippo some rubber out of other blades and swap them. Not too hard.

Watch out for the discs though. Those can get replaced quite often.

Man, that gearbox is awesome! Short throw, not notchy or rubbery like a BMW - I found those terrible. The clutch isn't so great, but it's not terrible and you can live with it in everyday traffic and it works just fine when you want to give it a bit of a go ;) Nice short travel. And it's appreciated when you want a quicker change. But, the clutch and gearbox somehow don't like each other. You should change gears very slowly (at low speeds) or very quickly (at high speeds), but not in between - you can go through the windscreen sometimes...

The Civic hatch is also quicker than most cars with similar outputs. In gear accleration is nice. They say that true petrol heads like to rev their cars, and the Civic will let you do just that, while using much less juice than rivals.

Road noise isn't great, but turn the music up :) And then get some low-noise tyres.

Biggest problem with Honda - parts. PROPERLY expensive! They whack you on labour. But shop around at the dealers, because they operate independently, so you can get better prices. A front fog light will cost you anywhere from R2000 - R3000 without labour!

I could go on forever. But the drive is much like a go cart. You feel close to the road, with a small steering wheel, responsive throttle and an engine that you can hear. So it depends what you are looking for. It ain't a family cruiser (suspension is too stiff for that), but you can have a lot of fun in it :)

Enjoy it man!!

Yip. And the front left costs more than the right...

EDIT: You would do well to find the details of a scrapyard, and get a spare tow-ring (mine got stolen - don't ask), and a spare fog light or two. You can NOT replace just the glass if it cracks / breaks - you have to replace the whole damn thing.

I have fog protectors on my fogs. Got them from a guy on the My Honda forum for R225 a pair. Good investment

Amen to that! I told the guy who bought my car to get some of those.

Oh, and check the rear windscreen on the car. There was a recall some time ago where they had to adjust the petrol cap spring and the rear plastic coming off (that piece that goes around the rear windscreen glass). But easy to fix :)

I learnt the hard way! LOL. only saw the protectors after my light was smashed! - but sold the car now! should of kept it though as i wanna buy another car for daily use and keep the millage low on my S2000

Like I said there as well, try find a good older shape Tec. That'll give you a lekka daily drive

Only bad thing I have ever heard is that the replacement parts are RIDICULOUSLY expensive. Brakes especially. Otherwise great cars.
Brake pads are fairly same price at the spares shop but if you go straight to honda then you pay through the nose. Always buy the too quality at those spare shops that is the expensive one and you never fo wrong

Thread resurrect!!
I have an older ballade, and found that i pay a portion of the price for replacement parts at Masterparts, or similar, instead of dealerships.
Changed brake pads and discs recently for front wheels, and replaced with labour for R1150.

Honda has a problem, a big one. They are not selling cars and on top of that those who bought their cars are running as fast as they could away from Honda parts, therefore they are also not making enough money from afters ales, unless they charge such ridiculous amounts to compensate for that.

Even parts for a common Jazz are ridiculously priced.

When I was looking at buying the Accord, the dealer was pretty up front with me about the brakes. He said they are made from a softer compound and thus wear quicker and are not that cheap.
I appreciated his honesty. I can't seem to remember why Honda's brake pads are made from a softer compound though.
On brakes all along I was thinking maybe the wear is due to high speeding but I see I'm not alone. It's a common weakness

Agreed on this . Parts prices are ridiculous . They are extremely reliable cars with good factory warranty compared to competitors . Its just a pity that they are losing the plot with designs . You either have a boy racer car ( type R /jazz sport ) or a pensioner/uber car ( jazz/ballade/brv ) . The CRV & HRV are nice..

Anyone know if there's a company that makes non-OEM brake pads for the 2013 Honda CR-V's handbrake? Apparently it has a random type and I can't seem to find a replacement pad anywhere. Honda themselves is something like R4k for just the replacement of the handbrake pad.

Does the handbrake have separate brake pads? Is it a bad or a shoe?

OK so what the dealer told me is that the handbrake isn't using the regular brakes on the rear wheel to engage. It's apparently some other drum somewhere on the rear axle. I have no idea how true this is or how accurate this is, but nobody seems to stock those pads and the dealer is a ripoff price on them, so I have no idea. It is apparently a drum, so I guess a shoe, not a pad. It confuses the crap out of me because I don't know much about these things, but it doesn't make 100% sense to me, so if someone has some info on it that would be epic.

The handbrake is barely barely working now. I have to park my car on a brick at home due to the incline, actually, so bad it is, but I just don't have the money to fix it. It works OK in traffic, so I never roll, but it needs to be done. I just find it hard to believe a set of shoes costs around R4k when I did brake skimming on the front discs and replaced the pads all round for around R2k a while ago.

Confused, because I can find this: https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/abs/7717176 Which is like R400 or something (excluding shipping and all that), so how the hell do they come to their ~R3.6k price tag?

That's the problem I was talking about earlier, Honda is busy painting themselves into a corner with their madness.

But he could be right as there are some cars that use that mechanism. There's Prodigy H which specializes in Honda parts, you could give them a call after lockdown and see what they say. In the meanwhile if the dealer cared they could have tried some adjustment on the handbrake, I am sure it's possible, those things are supposed to last forever since they only work for the handbrake, no way they could have worn to a level that they couldn't be adjusted, unless you drive a 20 yo car?

You could adjust them yourself if you have basic knowledge.
