Secondhand golf equipment advice

Don’t buy a set of second hand irons, they will likely frustrate the hell out of you and you’ll want to throw them in the dam following your balls.

My suggestion is decide on a budget for a set of irons, then go to a qualified PGA pro for an assessment. Not only will they find the irons most suited to your game, but they almost always fix small little things in your swing that they’re trained to pick up.

A good set of fitted irons will make the world of difference, and nothing is more frustrating than having the wrong irons - the technology in these things is insane and one set differs dramatically from the next. Then there is the shaft and the different dynamics these bring to your game.

A pro will help find the correct launch, bounce and spin profiles tailored to your swing, and often the first session is free.

There’s a PGA accredited pro at most decent golf clubs, but some of the bigger golf villages may also be able to assist.

Happy golfing and good luck breaking 100/90/80!
Thanks man!

If you followed along to the end I have changed my tune since the first post.

Your advice is spot on.

Got myself a coach. Got 10 individual one on one lessons.

I have seen sooo much improvement and the most in the last week. I had a small issue in set up and he picked it up during the lesson this week and has made things awesome.

Practiced in the net and a few hours hit the range this afternoon and it's been a world of difference.

Getting some if the irons back next week as he said clubs are in good order but getting them fitted will be worth my while mote than upgrading just yet. Coach suggested getting current clubs fitted/extended than new ones yet.

In no rush, would rather practice etc and get a great set later.

@syntax @SkippyRamirez and others

Lessons going well coach says keep the clubs and get them fitted I'm quite tall almost 1.87m he said a bit more length is all that's needed on some clubs.

Works for me. The anvil clubs do look beautiful almost brass color heads.

Would rather spend money where it matters.

Played another round this weekend parred the first hole then started over thinking things and things went off a little. Highlight of the day was a chip in from 20m away over a little hill. Won't lie let out a little scream.

Wanna try get out during the week to get the odd 9 hole in. Have a little cart that I'll wheel around.

Makes sense, a bit of lengthening will make a difference. Spending on lessons will almost certainly yield more results than dropping a fortune on clubs. As your game improves, you will eventually switch to clubs and shafts that match your new swing, but that takes time.

Course management is important and something to keep in mind, but golf has so many nuances and I would just focus on clean striking, distance control and getting a consistent swing and tempo over trying to add all these nuances early on. Once you can strike consistently I would put most of my effort into pitching, chipping and putting.

Glad you getting joy out the game, it always gives me both sides of sport, incredibly frustrating and aggravating, but unbelievable joy and satisfaction with that one good shot or putt.

Thanks will keep this in mind.

I think the swing consistency is finally getting there. There will def be a lot more focus on chipping and putting now. At least I can sorta chip around the garden :)

Oh why did I ever start playing golf? You will also get those thoughts. I've been at it for about 40 years. I was young and sucked at golf. After many years of biting the bullet I'm no longer young. One day all goes well, next day you'll lose the plot totally. I played (at my standard) almost faultless golf over the weekend. This morning, a quick nine holes made me feel like the day I started. I even topped 2 balls. Distance controll was non existent with both wedges and putter. It keeps one humble. Enjoy!

Was watching a video that reminds me of these comments.

You are not a pro it's a hobby just enjoy it!

Looking forward ard to the constant improvement.

Golf lesson going great.

The extended clubs have made things waaay more comfortable for my height and also waaay more accurate.

So today I decided the coach said there is nothing wrong with the clubs my old gary player anvil blades like below. So show me what they are capable of. I do 130-140 decently accurate now on a 7 iron. Without blinking no warm up he did 200 dead straight. Dont think there is anything wrong with these :p

I have extended my SW/PW/5/7 going to use these as my main clubs in combination with my 3 hybrid which I can do about 180-200 then driver 200 plus. Focusing more on consistent accuracy than distance now.

Heading out for a round this weekend and again month end. Ouch the bug bites bad!

lol, 200 with a seven iron is nuts (at the coast at least) I hit mine 170 on a good day. Skull it 150 on a club champs day.

Good to hear the lessons are going well, next you’ll be buying a house in a golf estate lol.

By the way, blades are great if you learn their nuances. They have a small sweet spot compared to cavity backs, but when you get it in that sweet spot oh my. Also with blades you can gain better control over shaped shots, but it takes a ton of practice and good technique. Properly forged blades will last a life time as well, especially if you take good care of them.

A good player will be good with any club.

Thanks I believe so - I am for the most part happy with them. Just got the 5/7 regripped and extended. Will use a hybrid instead of long iron. Likely the first club I will buy is a new driver the one I have was in the bargain bin for R50 in 2010 :P

You are correct hitting that sweet spot is a thing of beauty!

Do yourself a favour and read Tim Gallwey's Inner Game of Golf. Coaches and pro's may scoff at it , but at the very least it will increase your enjoyment of the practice side of golf.
I've been "playing" at the game for going on 30 years and the advice in the book just changed the way I thought about practice. It wouldn't say my handicap suddenly started dropping, but consistency and enjoyment of my Saturday morning stroll around after that f#$@ing little white ball definitely improved.
...way more so than after I spent a bundle on a TaylorMade bigbanger or that Scotty Cameron putter

Thanks for the recommendation will give it a read!

Always have your clubs suited to you by a professional at places like The Pro Shop.

They match the clubs to your body timing, swing etc otherwise you wasting your time and will never get the game right.

Otherwise I have a set for you Callaway SW to 2 iron , 3 wood and driver R30000................

If you don't have them matched you'll screw up your game and wallet.

Yeah thanks! Got some of the irons fitted now by Golflab in woodhill massive improvement on consistency already

I disagree with this if you are a high handicap beginner…

A good player will be good with any club.
You and me will be kek with any club.
…and agree with this instead.

The clubs are gonna make little difference until you have played a few years, get your handicap to low double/high single digits and know what you’re doing. Exceptions being if it’s very old clubs, wrong length if you are very tall/short or maybe the wrong driver/wood shaft stiffness if you have a fast swing speed, which few beginners have. Lessons and practice practice practice are more important.

I've been a 20+ with Taylormade speedblades, pings, Mizuno MP-18 and Cleveland GC-16's

You wrong Dude.

If you have the wrong shaft and head from the start you'll basically never get to where you want to be.

If you swing like a gorilla and don't have stiff shafts you'll basically never hit the ball correctly.

Did you read what I mentioned about exceptions??
