I kinda like the look of the fat one, its there any reason why I should choose one over the other?

Considering the size difference I'd say there's been quite a lot of hardware changes between the two. Just to be safer I'd get a Slim.

Any of them i guess.

They are not fragile like the PS3 and Xbox 360.

I prefer the Fat one as it does not have the external power brick.

Are you talking about the PS2 or PS3? Do you still get "fat PS2s" ? Buying a PS2 really should not be about the looks (i mean really who cares, it's a dead console).....really...now a PS3 , yes another story.

i still have th fat ps2 i bought about a year after ps2 launched, still runs like a dream.... just finished snake eater for the third time

Mkay, the way you knocked it I read it as being the size of a brick :) But anyway, I have no problem with the external PSU as the PS2 slim runs cooler.

i have never had an issue with game compatibility or heat from my ps2.... or my old xbox (original), much cooler compared to this gen

The latest slim model 9000x doesn't have an external psu unlike the previous slims.

My brother has his fat PS2 since December 16 2000 - R4,600.00 back then! It's also running like a dream 10 years down the line.

He's got a PS3 as well and f-unny thing (not really for him :( ) was that last weekend he was debating with a friend with an Xbox 360 - and reliabily came up. He knocked the Xbox and pointed out his his 10 year old machine still ran and his PS3 was still perfect.

Six days later his PS3 died ... a few days after he bought GT5 :(

lol, i remember paying something similar for mine aswell... haven't had issues with my ps3 and my xbox had rrod once, ms replaced it within a few days though and haven't had issues since, people can knock xbox reliability all they want but its still a good machine, i buy the vast majority of multi-platform titles for xbox these days as they tend to run better on it... Ps3 has some awesome exclusives though and some nice titles on the horizon.

It's really amazing what we pay for launch consoles in this country. In terms of the PS2 I personally prefer the Slim model.

Not that I repair either anymore ... parts are refurbished and expensive!

I got both a fat ps2 and a slim (bro using the slim chipped), i actually bought a Network adaptor for my fat one, you can slam a IDE HDD inside and use the software manager (HD Advance) to play games (no hardware modification necessary) and loads lekker. I am sure theres a much easier way now to do this but it costed me around 600bucks 5 years back i think it was. As said above, certain recent models of the PS2 may sort out any nitpicks or factory defects thay may have come with them (lag or cooling) which i haven't expereinced any problems with either. If you get the fat one, go for it IMO , get the network adaptor and copy your games and save the life of that laser. Original ps2 games are going for cheap now.

Keep us posted what your final decision is / was or will be :)

I went for the fat one... It has that launcher software on its memory card...So can I just put any hard drive with an IDE cable in that bay? And then load games off it?

Had the old PS2 Phat. Ran beautifully for 6 years and then got stolen! Got slim ps2 and had troubles from day 1. The lid on the cd drive didn't close properly, had it changed and had the same problem, so sold it. So to answer the question, imo, if you can get the old PS2, that would be my choice. Otherwise, go for PS3. Got a 60gig when they came out so i could play my ps2 games. Cost me R6500!!!

Why are people still even considering buying a new PS2? It's 10 year old tech. Why not buy a 14" crt and Voodoo 2 display card while your at it and install that on your Windows 98 Pentium 100MHZ machine.
