Security concern: VW Polo Vivo 2016

Makes me nervous for my 2011 Polo (non-vivo) - thinking of trading it in because of the hijack/ theft risk. But having no car repayments is great, so there's that

The rate of vehicle theft is the UK is about 5 time more than in SA last time I looked at the figures (56 000pa vs 350 000pa).

I got an email from my insurance warning about the risk of my Polo Vivo, sold it 2months ago, as I do frequently go into the Jhb CBD for one of my clients, just wasn't worth the risk, IMO. One of my colleagues was at a meeting in Illovo, midday, her Vivo was taken off a busy street.

I was in the same position and took the plunge, the car had 90,000km on it anyway, so I got a nice trade-in value for it, that is THEE beauty of VAG hatch backs, everyone wants them. I felt it wasn't worth my life being in danger, especially when driving into places like the Jhb CBD regularly, where countless Vivos are broken into, stolen or hijacked.

Yeah mine has also just ticked over the 90k km mark. I wonder what the offer would be on trade in - I'm thinking something around R120k. I think I'll maybe wait until next year when I get a pay increase

Mine was a 2011 1.4 Polo Vivo Conceptline, got R80,000 for it, dealer sold it off for R85,000, going by its last listing in Auto Trader that I saw.

Yah, don't rush. My main thing was not to draw any attention to myself, and always tried to park in area with guards or a camera etc...

I must say, there is nothing more beautiful than not having an installment to pay, lol :D stretch it out as long as possible!

I've seen models similar to mine going for +- R140k, so I think R120k is a reasonable expectation. I'm always paranoid about parking my car somewhere I deem remotely unsafe - always checking if it's still there.

Yeah, I'm trying to strike that balance of not keeping the car too long, therefore decreasing its value by too much, vs. repayment affordability, vs. not getting hijacked/stolen

Lol, your mindset now and mine a few months ago:

You will get great value as long as the milage is below 100k KM I believe. Stay strong man, I know exactly how you feeling! :)

my advice.... fut an aftermarket autowatch alarm
 
They open any lock with a T bar Allen key sharpened and tapered down to a screw driver point , open a car in 5 seconds .
Fit a level 4 visa approved alarm .

They stole all the contents of the car. Didn't take the car, probably because it's auto.

I have orderd a replacement part (take forever, comes from Germany, someone's walking with it!)

I want to know how to prevent something like this from happening again.

If theft is your concern:

Add a toggle switch in the positive electrical wire to the fuel pump. Have the toggle switch located on a position only you and your family would know. I had one done and the switch was hidden in the boot. It's not conspicuous when you open the boot when you park your car. Once the fuel pump doesn't get power it won't feed the engine and there would be no driving.

However, this is a new vehicle and it will ruin your warrantee ;)
 
Not sure about the vivo but the normal polo's you couldnt even unlock the doors if you were sitting inside if the alarm was set.
The unlock button on the dashboard for central locking did nothing and pulling a door handle made the pin go up but you couldnt open the door.
