Durban – A guard on patrol near a railway station dropped his firearm and accidentally shot himself in the thigh, a private security company said on Tuesday.

Reaction Unit South Africa head Prem Balram said the 30-year-old man was wounded near the Canelands railway station, north of Durban, while he was on patrol on Monday.

"It was established that while on patrol, the security officer dropped his firearm, resulting in an accidental discharge. Paramedics stabilised him on scene before transporting him to hospital," Balram said.

I would never carry a gun with one in the chamber.I understand they are probably required to do so.

carrying with 1 up... eish is all I can say.
Your DCS skills should be up to scratch so that it's not necessary

I doubt these guys get real training and continuous training..

He probably shot himself in the thigh while playing with the gun, unlikely that it would've discharged from a drop.

Guns are specifically designed to withstand a drop and "Drop-Tested" thoroughly.

Why is this news?
During firearm training I was informed that you need to take certain precautions as a matter of course to prevent this from happening.
Oh wait... I guess stories such as these sell newspapers.
