I've been driving a Tazz for the last 12 years. Bought it new in 2001 and it's got 360k on the clock now. The wife also has a Tazz (2005, 150k). We've decided it's time to buy a new car that's both safe and family orientated seeing that we'll probably drive it for the next 10 years too and we plan to have kids.

I'm really interested in the new Elantra. Shocked that the price went up by 20k from November last year when I took one for a test drive though. :wtf: I like that it was car of the year, it's safe and it's got a lot of features that more expensive cars have. Also, it's not bad looking at all. I'm not too keen on buying 2nd hand because in general I know that sales people are not really interested in selling good cars, but rather in maximizing their commission. I like the idea of starting with a new one, but I'm open to suggestions on 2nd hand ones.

What I'm looking for:
At least a 1.6 but prefer 1.8+
Sedan
Good warranty and service plan (really difficult to beat the Elantra here)
I'm not to worried about speed / high performance as I'm coming from a TT.
Extras would be great as I don't intend to spend extra money on the car after I bought it.

What cars can you recommend in the R200k - R250k range? I've never liked BMW's nor Mercs and I'm definitely not a Polo fan. Looked at the new Kia Cerato as well, but it's hellishly expensive.

I own that Elantra (got it for 250k incl. some extras). The only thing missing from it is a turbo diesel engine.

My recommendation would be the Honda Civic.

Quite a good choice.

Lancer is good mechanically but is long in the tooth and interior is showing its age. Jetta is Ok but very bland. Also not sure how reliable a TSI motor will be in 10 years time as they are not yet proven at that duration. The Cerato is nice (I have the 2010 model) and its been great so far but yeah the price is now on par with the rest so not really a value offering any more. New one looks good though and the 2.0l is R249k.

Other options:
Ford Focus
Chev Cruise
Corolla (Meh)

I paid 250k for a 1.8t audi a4 , 2011 , with 25000 on the clock , freeway plan up to 100000

That Lancer's not half bad. Looks a bit dated, but I'll investigate.

Don't use this a gauge between different cars.

Rather look at the power to weight ratios than all out capacity.

You'll have to give it to me in layman's terms. :D

Quite a good choice.

Don't like the Jetta much. The new Cerato is really interesting, but at 30k more than the Hyuandai, I'm not sure that it's value at all. Kia and Hyuandai for that matter is going to loose market share if they keep on increasing prices like this.

I'll have a look, thanks.

I would go Honda as well or get a SUV perhaps

Don't know hey, the SUV's that I can afford are just about the same size as the sedans, just higher. I'd rather get a sedan.

I take this back. Didn't know they had a new model. Looks good. But how good are these new 1.4l engines of today??

They pack enough of a punch for you to enjoy the drive. In other words, they can pull the car comfortably and cruise well on the highway. Nice family car.
