I don't know if MyBB has already had a good one of these debates, but it's one I'm constantly having with myself: which is the better vehicle to live with as a daily driver, between an SUV and a sedan?

I've only ever owned hatchbacks, but I honestly can't make up my mind which of these would be better for me.

Here's pretty much the list of pros I've compiled:

SUV:
- Some soft offroading possible (I'm not planning on a 4x4 SUV)
- Increased ride-height to see over traffic
- Bigger tires to drive through potholes with

Sedan:
- More corporate style points
- A sportier drive with better cornering
- More economical on fuel than SUV

So pretty much apples and oranges then...

If you've owned both, which do you prefer as your daily driver and why?

SUV for me bought a dishwasher and simply put in the back and took it home. I have a 4x2 and I have been stuck in the mud twice in unexpected situations where I went somewhere and it rained hard.

I wished I had gone for a 4x4 and they are usually only 50 k apart at 1 year old.

Interesting point! I guess that's the danger of an SUV ... you start thinking you can go anywhere, and then if you take it anywhere you're liable to get stuck unless it's a proper 4x4 version. I just don't know if the extra weight, fuel consumption and maintenance issues that may come with a 4x4 are worth it, but I'm sure they feel like that when you're stuck in the mud that once or twice!!!

SUV has to be the choice nowadays given that everyone is buying them. It's impossible to see past an SUV in traffic. You'll find that the idiot driver always ignores what a safe following distance means and ends up stepping on the brakes every 2 seconds. Being higher up does NOT mean you have to be there quicker. As far as I'm concerned, they will drive over you if it were an option.

I bought a washing machine from Game with free next-day delivery to my door.

A proper SUV will give you space. These crap Kia and Hyundai SUV's don't have that much more space in comparison to a sedan, and have a much much smaller boot capacity.

I sometimes don't want to be waiting at home for stuff to be delivered I find it very convenient being able to get things done the same day.

For sure, can be VERY useful at times - but that isn't a big enough reason for me to get an SUV.

If I had to get a (sensible) SUV, it would either be the Honda CR-V or the Subaru Forester.

I want to get an Ecosport...

Not so much a fan of the Ecosport ... cars made in India don't inspire my confidence, they just don't seem to have the right build quality even when they do have the right badge.

Now, the Ford Everest that's launching later this year ... *drools* I've got no clue how I'll ever afford it, but I'm pretty smitten with it.

Sedan. lighter on fuel and easier to drive and the sedan doesn't have as bad body roll.

Drove the 1.6 Ecosport on during a shoot for a TV program in 2013. Actually quite impressive. Very small and not much space at all. Wouldn't buy one though.

Most of the pros listed here apply even more so to a bakkie.

They will be selling it in Europe, so doubt there that much wrong with it.

I bought a second hand Captiva for the missus… ended up keeping it for myself. :)

Funny how people have loads of dosh for a SUV/car but not R300 for a delivery.

Just because I have R300 for delivery it doesn't mean I want to pay R300 for delivery. ;)

For me, a sedan is a waste of time.

Actually - if the 4 x 4 portion is excluded, the only diffs between SUV and sedan is the boot.

That little lunch box on a sedans butt .. called the boot .... is usless. Cant put tall things in, nor the dog, nor the kids, nor can you stack stuff.

So, SUV ,,,, but not all SUVs have that much space in the back either. The iX35 and CRVs are actually quite small.

So, a fairly LWB SUV is the thing.

Depends on your needs. Eg. for the "sporty/speed" driver a proper (performance) sedan anyway vs the active lifestyle or family man a SUV can make a very useful case for itself.

I just don't like waiting for things to be delivered. Why should I pay R300 if it will fit in the back.
