Hi guys

Looking around the net there seems to be a few online security stores.Firstly can anyone recommend one and secondly what is the best self defence device/weapon short of having a firearm?

Thanks in advance

...just to add, probably only the real thing (Taser). Unless you're just trying to scare someone off... the cheaper chinese gadgets won't disable someone. Pepper spray is the next best IMO cos it's so cheap.

One of these. Or something like it, but the Tai Pan just feel right in my hand.

I'm not a fan of all this less than lethal crap.

+1 on the less than lethal sentiment.
I know the OP explicitly said "short of a firearm", but still, people need to start upping their game when it comes to personal safety and security. Just my 2 cents.

So srothman and Nuke, how well do you know your law? And what are the chances that an accomplice gets away after you kill the guy only to resurface in court to testify against you?

If you don't mind blood and having a month on ARVs for PEP, then rather get something you can have more control over like this...

But honestly, you don't want to be responsible for killing someone, it's a big thing, legally and mentally. At least the Taser and pepperspray don't require physical contact... just make sure you get a decent brand of pepperspray, hit the eyes / mouth and be prepared to make an exit ASAP. Spare yourself the trouble.

 You think one of their accomplices would show up to testify?
There is no loyalty or honour

Well they may have to if they are caught... and hopefully they are. Of course they're going to paint you as the aggressor.

My advice is to go for Krav courses - cut to the chase - the quickest route to disabling your attacker, then get away. If nothing else, it'll build confidence and give you skills. It's the least 'flash' of the martial arts and is only concerned with the end result, not how impressive it looks to get there.

The best defense weapon is you.

Any tool you purchase will be useless without the correct mindset and training. (Eg. The likes of Mark Human - google is your friend)

Agree with this - the fogger is a bad idea in wind especially. The direct spray has much better range too.

And better in a car too...

I had to use it on an assailant at my cars front passenger window, direct spray stream went right past the passengers face and hit assailants face, in a flash he was away from the window and I could make an escape over the intersection after checking it was clear, no pepper spray affecting us in the cabin.

++1. Have had first hand experience of the fogger variety blowing back/away in strong winds instead of hitting it's target.
What is the strongest/most potent pepper stay one can buy and from where...? (military/police grade pref)

The only draw back for me regarding pepper spray is that you need to be accurate and you need be prepared to engage your target, even if by a few meters.

For someone that may panic in such circumstances, that might prove difficult. Also if your assailant wears glasses, the pepper spray might not be effective.

I've never used a stun gun, but I think it might be my preferred option to give to my wife or daughter.

You most likely won't have time to grab your tool of choice anyway, doesn't matter if its a gun, knife or pepper spray. I fully agree on Krav Maga.

The reason why I have a knife close is more to make sure I don't have a regret later not having it, when I could have used it.

On the issue of the law, that is why I prefer a knife. If an attacker is close enough to use a knife on, he is most likely a mortal danger to you.

A good taser is all you need. Like people are saying, make sure you get an original
