Self defence units

You must be popular at PTA meetings.

Unless you are trying to be funny I do not see the relevance of this statement.

I have been carying for years to shops, weddings, PTA meetings and even uncle Paul's a few days ago.

The whole idea with concealed carry (as per FCA) is that it needs to be .... wait for it .... concealed! ;-)

You mentioned Gunsite. Go check out the dealers section and look for Tac-Shac. If I remember correctly they had some at a silly prices.

*disclaimer* I'm not advertising or selling. Just saying.

They very good I bought my ak ammo there. Very good price but had to buy 700 rounds minimum thankfully it's legal on sporting license.
But you cannot reload it's Chinese Norinco

Oh and on that subject... Covered is NOT the same as concealed! I for one think the concealed carry law is stupid, that's just me. But if there's one thing I hate even more, it's other people's blatant disregard for this law. If you decide to carry, do it correctly!

+1 You and me both.

Unfortunately stupid comes in all ages and sizes.

Thanks I will look into this.

Glad it is not around my children. I would be very nervous if people felt the need to come to a childs school armed. I respect your right that you feel the need to carry a loaded firearm near children, but personally I would prefer no firearms be allowed near my kids at a school. I dont know you from a ball of soap. I dont know if you are a highly trained individual with the right skills and mental maturity to carry a firearm and I dont know if you are a lunatic ammophile who is compensating for other deficiencies. Since I dont know, personally I would want all people with firearms kept away from my children at school.

Just like ammophiles want their rights to be respected so they can have guns on them at all time, they need to respect other people who dont want that type of environment near their children.

Any tool you purchase will be useless without the correct mindset and training.

+ 1

If you see another human being in front of you , or you are concerned about hurting people, or feel any compasion or concern about inflicting pain on another person in self defence, if you hold back in any way, you will be the one getting hurt.
In that event then the best is try and get out of there as quick as possible.

I am not Rambo nor do I have any delusions or desires to take on one or more criminals. As I am often out and about with my 2 young daughters the firearm is an equaliser in a last resort situation.

I also want to stress that a firearm is a tool for private defence. I will always try to prevent/avert/get away from a conflict situation but if left with no other alternatives I will pretect myself and loved ones with lethal force.

As far as my mental maturity is concerned - my wife is a clinical psychologist who approves and fully supports the tools I carry.
(Especially after 2 break-ins while we were at home - needless to say we have subsequently moved house to a better area)

Do I feel it necessary to carry while on school grounds? That is not really the point - we are most vulnerable when leaving and entering our house and when arriving at school property it would be very irresponsible to handle a firearm and leaving it in the car; hence it stays on my person.

I will also add that if carried in a retension holster (like mine) the firearm does not come out unless I draw it.
Point in case I came off my mountain bike whilst cycling down tokai forest and lost a few things (my dignity for one) but the firearm was not one of them.

I also carry on me a special lock in the form of a magazine that once inserted in place of the magazine and locked it renders the firearm inoperable + have a special safe mounted in the car for the odd occasion where I need secure storage when not at home - eg. When swimming with my girls.

Furthermore I practice regularly and have done several training courses to further my skills.

I understand and respect your concerns - hopefully from the above you will take away that firearm ownership is not something taken lighty and safety is the number one concern.

If you are in CT (can't see from my phone) I will gladly take you to the range and let you find out for yourself that a firearm is just an inanimate object that on it's own is not something to be feared.

I go fishing at a small dam in a very dodgy area and i dont have access to a firearm hence i started this post.
The good tazers are upward of 2k which i cannot afford so i think i will go the pepperspray route.
Please explain the difference between a "direct" or "fogger" type pepperspray?

As I said, I dont know you, Im sure you are fine, but for instance, there is one person posting in this thread that I know for a fact can not tell the difference between fantasy and fact.. who is a conspiracy theorist and a well known forum bigot. This guy even believes in a form of jihad or holy war. Hectic paranoid delusions. So while I accept that you might be competent, I know the mental standard for getting a firearm is not very high.

There is a time and a place for firearms, but my kids school is not one of them. In your home or hunting on a farm are far better places for them.

One sprays like a "fog" and the other in a direct stream which you have to aim with. The fog is susceptible to the wind and has less range hence why people mostly recommend the direct stream version.

Wait. please elaborate on concealed carry.
most people carry handguns in holster on hip and not concealed.
I like to carry it under my shirt as it draws less attention.

In waist band (IWB) and then either (appendix) 1 o'clock or 4/5 o'clock with special clips that allow shirt to be tucked over.
Will be completely concealed and hidden from all but experienced eyes.
To draw you practice pulling up shirt with one hand while drawing with the other.

Have a sleeping child in lap so please google mtac or geoff carter custom carry for examples.

Direct = stream = best used in z pattern on target

Fogger = area spray = best used to spray behind you as you flee down passage to get to safe room :-)
Dont use this in confined spaces you cant get out of quickly (like your car)

Yes, because bad guys have the courtesy to wait until you are done with you meetings. I don't mean to offend, and like I mentioned earlier, each one to his own. Best part is, and I'm sure I speak on behalf of most responsible firearm owners who carry the way they are supposed to, you won't even realize they are carrying until you look for them to say thanks for saving you and your kids after the SHTF.

Statement like "I know the mental standard for getting a firearm is not very high", on the other hand, I take exception to. I agree, the competency tests leave much to be desired, but I don't appreciate general statements like that.

Its a silly thing to be offended by, but go ahead.

AFAIK schools are gun free zones.

Not necessarily. In fact, most places that are declared as so-called "gun free zones" use the term very loosely and incorrectly. Slapping a no firearm sign on the wall only makes the right if admission easier to enforce, but does not legally make it a gun free zone.
