Self defence units

Not necessarily. In fact, most places that are declared as so-called "gun free zones" use the term very loosely and incorrectly. Slapping a no firearm sign on the wall only makes the right if admission easier to enforce, but does not legally make it a gun free zone.

Will check it up but I'm pretty sure it's by law that schools are covered.

EDIT: It seems government buildings are automatically covered but not really seeing any more information.

Gun free zones.....like that's going to stop a criminal. Bloody idiots thinking that will help.
I can just see it a gang of armed men with machine guns go somewhere see a sign and say to each other wait we can't go in there its a gun free zone

Nope

Only gazetted locations are gunfree = National Key Points (jury still out which they all are as some of them are classified) and some goverment offices.

It was tabled to make schools and universities gunfree but that has not been made official yet.

All private premises / public parks / etc where signs are displayed means that you can be asked to leave. SAPS can arrest you for trespassing if you dont comply. (same as skateboarding in a mall, etc)

Again - by the very definition: law-abiding citizens are not the problem... it's the bad guy with a gun and intention to take your possession or more that is the problem. These same guys do not care about signs because .... wait for it ... they live outside the law!

The existing laws are more than adequate - we desperately need more qualified and trained officers to enforce those laws.

100%. Government buildings are specified (as per Section 140 of the FCA), and automatically get classified as such. To my knowledge, no other buildings, or categories, have been gazetted. It is a long (and expensive) process.

Ah yes I remember now... I actually emailed GFSA to find out about this, was ages ago and it seems my memory failed me.

Scary to think just anyone can walk onto a school premises with a gun.

Well... not anyone.

Only a person who is deemed competent and has been authorised to do so by SAPS :-)

Remember that a criminal record will disqualify you from getting a S13 (self defence) license.

2007 if I remember correctly.

In any case, I honestly don't see the point of a GF zone. if someone intends doing hard with a firearm, they will do so, regardless of what a particular building is classified as.

Again ......people think any of these restrictions will stop a criminal?
This only affects law abiding citizens

^^^^^^^ THAT!!!

...or the guy who is less than legal, and needs to be thrown in a deep dark hole.

Sorry - I thought you meant legal firearm owners.

Yes - for those the law should be swift and uncompromising.

Why are people so bothered about someone carrying a gun at a school?

Is it that you are worried about it going of by "accident", because it is a "dangerous device"? Most parents bring their children to school in "dangerous devices", often they buy them their own "dangerous devices" for their 18th birthday. I'm pretty sure many more people die in car accidents than by guns going of by accident.

If you are worried about someone intent on harm, do you really think they need a gun? If you are the aggressor, you can do as much damage with a knife, piano wire, or even your bare hands.

While I may not agree with him on everything, this guy has a few good ideas

Well said. Guns are not the problem. And what happens if some kid comes to school with a knife to kill someone? I damn well hope someone has a gun to stop it

I go fishing at a small dam in a very dodgy area and i dont have access to a firearm hence i started this post.
The good tazers are upward of 2k which i cannot afford so i think i will go the pepperspray route.
Please explain the difference between a "direct" or "fogger" type pepperspray?
You can get a second-hand snub nosed .38 special revolver for around R700.

While not as good as a semi auto pistol in terms of capacity, it's much better than any of the less lethal options discussed, when faced with a lethal threat.

Pepper spray I guess since you want to diable the guy in time for you to escape/plan next move.

AFAIK schools are gun free zones.

It doesnt look like that concept is well respected :(

But you are correct, public schools are government buildings and all government buildings are gun free zones.

As per my previous post:

Nope

Only gazetted locations are gunfree = National Key Points (jury still out which they all are as some of them are classified) and some goverment offices.
(public schools not included)

SARS offices are a good example - they have metal detectors and wands at most entrances preventing public from carying inside but it is not illegal to carry in the building.

It was tabled to make schools and universities gunfree but that has not been made official yet.

If police stations are government buildings and government buildings are gun free zones..

@ saflyfish. Get yourself a rake pole (or if you want to spend the money, a real bo), and practice with it. In an open space I prefer that to a knife. Enough range so even a guy with a panga will think twice.
