I need some advice.
A friend of mine hasasked me to help her sell her iMac Pro, the offers I get from apple and other "official" apple retailers are less than half what I feel its worth.
The only interest I've received on FB marketplace and gumtree have been from obvious scammers.
Where would I be able to sell this for a reasonable price? I'm sure there are legit people out there that would rather pay 80k instead of 120/130k for an iMac pro.
Where do I find these people?

Problem is they are essentially worth nothing since the M1 launched except for a very very strict niche of the market…in what was already a niche in the market.

So likely your expectations are way off and what you’ve been offered isn’t actually a bad deal.

It’s only worth as much as you can actually sell it for.

Thanks for schooling me

Yeah so for 40k-50k someone can have the custom spec iMac M1 with 512GB storage and 16GB memory and it’s going to kill the iMac Pro for the vast majority of use cases.

So to try sell a second hand iMac Pro for more than what an iMac M1 costs brand new is going to be problematic.

Of course you sacrifice screen size but for the money difference you could literally buy a MacBook Pro and a monster screen and still have loads of cash in your pocket with more performance.

It’s just an unfortunate case of poor timing and technology moving onward.

So what you rate is the most I can expect to get for the iMac Pro?

It's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Nothing more.

That's the second time this phrase has been mentioned and its stood out for me. I interpret that as - try selling it for the price I initially hoped for, to a buyer who doesn't know any better.

Why is she selling?

If it's to upgrade, then the 'official' apple retailers may offer her more on a trade-in (it's also worth trying different stores - my brother got offered 2K more for his old ipad pro that he was trading in at Canal Walk 'iStore' compared to Cavendish 'iStore' (both owned by Core - go figure)

If it's to raise cash, then Carbonite is probably your best bet.

My nephew's experience was similar - couldn't get the price he thought his old iMac was worth (and narrowly avoided being scammed on FB/Gumtree) - he eventually caved and accepted a 'trade-in' price from one of the 'official' stores.

I mean, if someone gives you a 100k for it, it's your win and their loss. But that is what they feel tit was worth and thus, is what it was worth, to them.

Same goes for people paying 1Bar for a collectable BMW, from the 90s.

But @SauRoNZA mentions; it's poor timing to try sell this unit now, with the M1 being out.

Either way, good luck with the sale.

That's one way of thinking about it.

Basically if someone is willing to

- pay you 20K for a machine that you paid 40K for, that's what it's worth
- pay you 10K for a machine that you paid 40K for, that's what it's worth
- pay you 35K for a machine that you paid 40K for, that's what it's worth

You have to decide at what price you're willing to let it go for.

The M1 processors killed the performance of the iMac Pro. The iMac Pro didn't even last more than one generation - being killed off the same year it was released.

No one is going to pay premium dollar for a second hand iMac Pro, when there is better performance to be had for 1/3rd of the cost brand new.

Simply put, you won't recoup your investment unfortunately.

Selling for the cash.
Then Carbonite is your best bet - lot less likely to be scammed but be careful all the same.

The 'resellers' on Carbonite will generally give you a fair price and are trustworthy.

On the other hand, the buyers there are pretty clued up so you're not likely to find a 'sucker' willing to pay over the odds.

Heh! it's hard for people trying to sell their iMac's to raise cash to accept that the resale is actually low - my nephew was in the same boat and kept saying 'but, but, I paid 35K why won't anyone even nibble at 20K, it still works perfectly and is only 2 years old' - such is life - I introduced him to the concept of depreciation and pointed out that computer equipment is generally depreciated over 3-4 years these days.

It was only an investment if it was used to generate income.

It's not an investment in the sense that it will retain or increase in value with time.

It was my friend's mom's, she used it to generate income.
The thing is, she paid 100k for it...
Apple wants to give me 16k for it...
