On 26 April 2012, I upgraded my Vodacom contract to an IPHONE 4S. Then last Thursday morning, after charging my phone the screen went all bonkers. To the extent that I could not do anything. So I decided to drain the battery and recharge it. After this action, the screen started flickering but can still perform tasks on my phone. I then called Vodacom customer care to get advice on what I should do in this situation. The Customer Care then actually told me to take the battery out of the phone to do a hard reboot, even after I told them it was an IPHONE. Feeling very disappointed I called Apple US Customer Care to seek help. They told me that in such situations it usually is a battery hardware fault.

After knowing this, I went to Vodacom Repairs in Midrand to book the phone in. I provided all the information that I've received from Apple US as well. I got an SMS stating that my phone is ready for collection this week Tuesday, only to find that they have downgraded my IPHONE 4S iOS to an older version of 5.0.1 (when I booked it in, it was v5.1.1). So I questioned them about whether they actually know IPHONE, and they just told me that my screen is now fixed. I followed up with asking that what if it happens when I upgrade the iOS, when it happen again? Why did they downgrade in the first place? Then a consultant on site then suggested that I book the phone in again, reassuring me that this time the Hardware will be checked. 3 days later, I get an SMS for collection. Only to find that they merely did a software upgrade to v5.1.1 which I could have done myself.

I was later told by the consultant that Vodacom Technicians are not allowed to check any IPHONE hardware related issues. They are not equipped to do so. If any IPHONE is faulty due to hardware the policy is to exchange. Since they cannot replicate the problem, the Vodacom repairs manager, Natasha, stated that they don't have enough reason for an exchange.

So my question to Vodacom is this: How can you sell a phone with no phone support? My IPHONE is only 2 months old and already it is having issues. If Apple US HQ says that it is a battery issue, will Vodacom question their expertise?

Now after getting the phone back from Vodacom my battery does not even last for one whole day. Before it would last for at 1.5 to 2 days before it needs charging.

Apple dictates all warranty and support functions on their phones.

How were they able to downgrade the iOS to 5.0.1 in the first place?

Exactly what I asked them, but they didn't even know at the time that v5.0.1 is an old version!

Apple swap out, they don't repair.

@Jannievanzyl - Vodacom stated to me that they don't have enough reason at the moment to swap out. As they cannot replicate the problem and they downgrading seemed to have resolved the problem. Now my phone battery life have become ridiculously low, it doesn't even last a day when I don't make much calls. My usage behavior has not changed from before the incident! The manager states that I need to wait till it happens again, if they are not qualified repairs center by Apple, then who are they to make such judgements!

+1, u sure u got ur same phone back?

I had my screen protector on my IPHONE, it was untouched. So I presume that it is my phone. The service and expertise is just socking! How can SP sell phones that they cannot support or make qualified expert judgements on?

So below is the response I got from Vodacom after posting on their Facebook. I really erge Vodacom to not treat people who get iPhones as people who don't know how it operates! I've worked internationally in the Telecoms industry for last 10 years, and get told the below!

Dear Wei-Ling

Thank you for your e-mail.

I had a look at the Job Repair reports and I noted the Display Problem mentioned on both. On the second report however, it states that a technician did a quality check on the device and found everything to be working fine.

There are a few things iPhone users can do to increase the battery life duration. These include
- dimming the device background light settings
- ending back ground activity (by double tapping the Home button > one the active icons are displayed, press and hold until the icons start wobbling > tap the "No Entry" symbol to close)
- when not in use, close the "Enable 3G" service
- Closing or reducing the "Location Services" option (these latter services are always scanning and this can affect battery power durations)

Vodacare is a cellular repair service organization and our business model is based on the manufacturer's warranty obligations and conditions.

You are more than welcome to have the handset rebooked at any Vodacare for a second opinion.

I apologise for the inconvenience caused.

Warm Regards

David Jacobs

Here is my response to him, let's see what Vodacom will reply.

Hi David,

The point here is that my IPHONE is not back to the original state which I got it from Vodacom 2 months back. Would like you to provide with more details of the following that you have mentioned:
1. What are the detailed manufacturer's warranty obligations and conditions of IPHONE?
2. Confirm on why I received a SMS that my phone will be sent to the manufacturer and it didn't?
3. What are the quality checks that was done on my phone and how was it done? Was a quality check done on my battery?

My husband has an exact same IPHONE, whereby his usage of data and voice exceeds mine but battery life lasts longer. He got his phone from MTN, this only gives me the impression that Vodacom are providing customers with defected IPHONES.

Lastly I've mentioned I've booked the phone in twice already. How MANY times would you like me to book it in? Plus I got a professional opinion from APPLE US which Vodacom keeps ignoring!

Regards,
Wei-Ling
