Hi everyone

I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.4 with entourage 2008. I can receive mail but not send mail. Even if i install postbox or use mail it all does the same. It always times out when sending. `i can send and receive mail on windows 7 laptop with no issues. Any suggestions? i cannot ping the smtp server form the mac book but from any other pc it works okay.

It might be because Outlook uses a different transport to Entourage. Outlook will use Microsoft's proprietary protocols (MAPI or the webstuff) while Entourage is limited to SMTP, which might be block. You can test that by opening a terminal and typing:

telnet my.mail.server 25

If it times out, or hits some other server, that would be a problem.

There is an update for Entourage that allows it to use the web services stuff (assuming your Exchange has it): http://www.microsoft.com/mac/itpros/entourage-ews.mspx

i tried the telnet but this is the result:
Last login: Fri Jul 2 06:58:03 on console
Shaun-Bridgenss-MacBook:~ shaunbridgens$ telnet my.mail.server 25
my.mail.server: nodename nor servname provided, or not known
Shaun-Bridgenss-MacBook:~ shaunbridgens$ telnet smtp.iburst.co.za 25
Trying 196.2.97.233...
telnet: connect to address 196.2.97.233: Operation timed out
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host
Shaun-Bridgenss-MacBook:~ shaunbridgens$

I'm not connecting to exchange but to my iburst account.
pop3.iburst.co.za
smtp.iburst.co.za

how do i check my firewall stauts?

OK. There is no reason why the PC would be able to connect to port 25 and the Mac not, assuming you're connected via iburst, of course. I'm not able to connect to that mail server either but that might just be because I'm not on the iBurst network.

$ telnet smtp.iburst.co.za 25
Trying 196.2.97.233...
telnet: connect to address 196.2.97.233: Connection timed out

I am however able to connect to their MX:

$ telnet mail.iburst.co.za 25
Trying 196.2.97.236...
Connected to mail.iburst.co.za.

You can try that just to see that you can actually connect outbound on port 25 (you will probably not be able to send mail through it though).

The Mac firewall does not restrict outbound connections, so unless you have something like LittleSnitch and accidentally blocked Entourage, that shouldn't be a problem

hi koffiejunkie ...i tried the following as my smtp server ...mail.iburst.co.za and it worked ...rather strange though ....i checked my default port settings and 25 is ok ....any idea why it could be blocking?...i have nothing else installed other than snow leopard and office 2008 ....

i called iburst and they said there is nothing wrong with their servers ... i am using my mtn victory modem to dialup cause that's a 3g contract ...could this have anything to do with it?

You probably won't be able to access an smtp server of a particular ISP from another network unless of course they have authentication set on that smtp server that allows all networks to access it.

If you are on MTN's network then you will likely have to use MTN's SMTP (outgoing mail) server. To stop spam, most ISP's will not allow you to send mail through another ISP's server.

thanx guys .... i tried my wife's company's smtp server with her authentication and by god it works. .....
