Sennheiser HD 598

Niteowl: Sorry, don't know of anywhere that will let you try one, ufortunately that seems to be rare. we normally borrow someone else's..

Thanks TJ
Sennheiser should have a dedicated store where all available headsets can be heard.
Especially high end sets.
Anyway if someone is able to help with an audition that would be great :)

Most of my listening is on iPod or HTC HD2 running Android.
Suppose I could feed into a PreAmp if needed and use the headphone output.

Just a thought it's possible the HD 598 since it comes with standard the larger jack, may indeed be designed for an amp of sorts! What do you thing TJ

Also for traveling what do you recommend apart from the Bose Ae2?
Is there a decent alternative that you can recommend.
I've seen the Sennheiser Bluetooth options but I'd rather put money into quality than wireless!

Cheers

It's because 'audiophile' devices tend to use 6.3mm jacks.

Most/all headphones benefit from amplification.

Strangely, my colleague's HD600 comes with 3.5mm jacks.

I absolutely love my 6.3mm jacks on my HD555. They work very nicely with the Asus Xonar Essence STX and the Yamaha LS9 mixing console - no adapters required :D

I have the entry level HD202. How big a difference does the HD5's make?

Also looking for a store I could test a demo.

There is no comparison between the sound of the HD202's and the HD5xx/6x0 series headphones !

The HD202 is very popular, because it is offering pretty good sound quality for its price. I'm still using my 10yr old HD202's at the church :)
I think the bass on the HD202's are slightly amplified when comparing it with the HD555's.

I'm really not sure if you'll be able to find a store that demo's these HD5xx/6x0 series headphones. So good luck with that - and please tell us if you do find a store that demo's them!

IIRC HD202's are closed design? Something to consider, with HD>5xx being open design (sound leaks).

Yup PostmanPot, the HD202 is closed ear design, although it actually fits on your ear since the cups are too small to go over your ears.

The bass will be deeper/more prominent on the closed ear headphones, like the HD380 Pro DJ for instance, than the open ear ones (eg. HD555 or higher).

Perhaps arguably a bass not intended by the producer, due to closed design's natural increased bass?

:p

Open FTW, sound stage!

Bought the HD558 over the HD598. Don't think the 598 justify the extra money and there is a mod for the 558 which makes them sound almost identical to the 598.

Either way, both the 558s and the 598s are excellent choices and worth it!

What's nice is that you can run the 5 series both through an amp or direct and they will sound great either way. So they will even sound great if you don't have an amp or take them along on your travels.

It also is possible to change to cable on these and replace it with a shorter, 3.5mm jack

I listened to these for traveling purposes and sounded decent enough.
However I can assure you my HD 485 are significantly better, so imagine the 5's would also be way better.

Going slightly off topic - can anyone suggest a SUPER comfortable pair of headphones for around 1k? (maybe just over, depending on how good they are :D)

Not really an audiophile so I'm not too phased about sound quality, but they obviously mustn't be terrible. An attached mic would be beneficial, but not required. I don't exactly have small ears so I find a lot of the cheaper headphones very uncomfortable, so I've vowed to find a comfortable set this time :p

Any assistance would be great!

Import Goldring DR150 for ÂŁ29.95. Superfi.

They look really good! Looks like Superfi doesn't have them in stock (unless I'm blind)...do you know of anywhere else I can import?

I'll probably get one of those Zalman mics as well :p

Try Amazon.co.uk.

They really are comfortable! Almost as good as my other Sennie HD595's (same design as HD555, 558, 598).

And they are 1/3 of the price of HD558!

Also less Ohm (DR150 = 32Ohm, HD5xx = 50Ohm) so they will be driven better by regular 3.5mm jacks, iPods, etc.

Turns out none of the sellers on Amazon ship to SA and I can't seem to find them online anywhere else. Does Superfi ship to SA?

I can get a pair of HD515's for about R770 delivered off ebay (excl customs). Seems like a trusted dealer as well. Do you think its a good deal?

Thanks for your help so far btw :p

Sounds like a really good deal if:

They're new

The seller is legit and you actually get them

They're not fakes. There are apparently lots of Chinese fake Sennheisers on ebay, just Google it. They look exactly like the real thing but sound awful. Apparently the 11-year olds who make them are good at taking pics but not such great audio engineers. :D Still, it is a trusted seller...

Edit: See this link, Sennheiser themselves are well aware of the problem: http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/home_en.nsf/root/sound_counterfeiting

Got my 558 for R1000 to put it into perspective although that's imported. Bought them on holiday
