Sentech Tower "OPTIMIZATION" - Bye Bye signal

I guess this is directed at ProAsm unless anyone else knows :

1. Have Sentech finished adjusting all the Phase 1 towers in JHB to the 5.7 km mode?
2. Will the Phase 2 towers be set to 5.7 mode by default so as not to cause the same problems?

To everyone :

Those that are still connected after the adjustments, have you noticed any improvement in the stability of the connection?

Whoever answers Perdition, please extend the scope of his question 1 above to included Pretoria, or are we next to experience these "optimization" problems?

I guess they must have been working on the system this weekend. I have had sporadic connectivity since yesterday afternoon, and have been down completely for most of today. Normal signal level from my tower [22] La Montagne, Pretoria the whole time, but the status monitor kept reporting "No Answer" when it tries to connect.

Generally though, my connection has been quite stable in the three weeks I have had my modem. Uptime is normally a couple of days at a time, max was about 5 days. Connectivity seems fine again since about 3:00pm this afternoon.

Hey guys i think we need to look at the scope of what Sentech are doing, for the very very very first time in the HISTORY of south africa you really have a true alternative to internet connectivity.. this has never been done before, so all the teething problems still might be going on for a while but damn these guys have done well in under a year give it to them. Stick with em, and im sure without a doubt much like when cell phones first came to SA it will all get sorted out, as long as they dont get greedy and push the customer aside, they will prosper[|)]

Fantasy is what people want, reality is what they need.

I was told by tech support (for what it's worth) that they've set it to 5.5km.

Perdition, no, only the real troublesome towers have been done.
Except for one or 2, the rest people would hardly notice.
And yes, Phase II towers will be tweaked before locked into the grid, like 22 was, only when all is well does the backhaul get enabled.

Jas, Sunnyside I think has been done but others will follow if need be.

I have had a severe drop in signal from tower 12 too.. [:(][:(][:(]

I've gone from 22% to 9%
And I can't connect anymore. [:(!]

I feel cheated because I checked if I had signal BEFORE I signed up.
Was happy as a pig in poo, but no longer.

I wonder what source of recourse I have now?
Will Sentech suspend my account until I have signal again?
It's not right.

Tower 22 Range settings still seems totally screwed ;-)

Heya ProASM. From what I understand tower 22 in JHB is near fourways - many kms from me and yet I'm picking it up at 25% signal strength - obviously I cannot connect but I do think Sentech need to fix the tower.

Hopefully a techie will be a visisting me 2morrow to test signal - I almost feel sorry for em ... ;-)

Less efficient"... yes by about 40%
...

Extended range is for farming communities
<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote"> Extended range was designed for farming communities (did any one see the lions on TV being tracked by GSM+GPS ?), just like I have the can on my desk that was designed for coffee. But you clearly looked at all the pratical issues, so you must be right. Clearly someone have taken the parastatal out of you (if it was there in the first place).

Tower 22 in Pretoria still seems to be down (La Montagne). I haven't been able to connect properly since Saturday. I'm getting the remote computer doesn't respond error. I'm only 2km from the tower with 24% signal.

If I could remember base station, I would give it ;)
But yeah, since sunday morning early mine's been down too.
And sunday night up again, and notice down again this morning.

This is first time Ive had trouble since I started up, (couple of months ago)

So it's ... acceptable :)

AG NO MAN
i was under the impression these last few days that there was a problem with MY side of things.

I was running great, 2-3 bars and all, then round about the start of this post i get 1 bar.

I get onto the forum to SEE THIS ..

sorry, but this is getting not funny anymore. I spent alot of money just to get signal, which sentech in all their wisdom and money could not achieve, and now they muck around with the towers.

I AM ALSO TOWER ON 12....! [V] [:(!] [V] [:(!] [V] [:(!]

i phoned the antenna people to find out what is happening, to have them come fix the problem, because I didnt expect sentech to muck me around.

sorry but i have such a head ache, you cant believe, I have had so much trouble with telkom, and now sentech does these little things that mucks me around.

i am not impressed.

which other tower can i use from douglasdale (in the ditch near galloway ave) if i cant use tower 12. Which direction do i point the antenna (which might i remind you is not supported by sentech who doesnt care if i get signal, no matter how much i want to)
i am slightly annoyed

I know tower 36 was down from (at least) midday yesterday (Sunday) until 11:50 Monday. I have no idea what they were doing.. "upgrading" according to tech support. Frustrating as hell since I need the connection. Anyways its working now.

Support also said something like "they were fixing problems and discovered a whole bunch of problems on the tower" so maybe thats why 36 (sunnyside) has been down so long.

ProAsm, why dont they shut down the tower (signal section) if the auth or backhaul is not working? Then maybe the modem could at least try find another tower in the meanwhile. Otherwise the whole time it sits on the "Remote computer" problem even though it has 20% signal.

Basically what has happened in several case is the NodeB's were mounted up the mast near the antennae for greater efficiency, so the electrical contractors put the main breaker up there. The rest of the equipment is on the ground, now when the techies go out to work on the stuff, the chances are they dont have a "climber" with them so the NodeB's stay on. This is changing as breakers are now be installed at the bottom.

can i just find out the total thought process.

The signal on tower 12 is used by people that are MORE than 6KMs away
Right? OK.
The way it should work is , a person should use the tower that is 6 meter or closer
Right? OK.
Sentech doesnt have signal in some areas in the city and those who connected to 12 , might have #12 as their only way of connecting.
Right? OK.

The flip side of the thing is, I know you want to give qaulity service to those close by and are inside the plan of distruting signal. I am all for making things work how they should....

but i think something was overlooked, what about us who dont connect to a tower in a 6KM radius, and have to connect a bit further from home?

I am clearly on the border of the signal but i get dropped alot. And the tower plan is not public, and the people who may talk about it start a sentence with "umm welll... i dont realy know but...."

Hello Tad,

I've now been advised to get a high gain antenna. But here's the fun bit. Tower82 - Radiokop has also been adjusted so my signal from MY tower (1.9km away) is now so low one can barely pick it up - and I still cannot connect to it ;-)

The only towers that are now VERY strong (after Sentech adjustments) are tower 22/102 in Fourways - FAR more than 6km's away.

Circles ... DAMMIT ... I wish I would stop travelling in Circles at Sentech....

I've been told NOone can give me details on PhaseII in Gauteng and that I'd have t "wait and see" - stunning customer relations ;-)

Regarding the Phase II rollout.
Its not a case of "hey thats a cool building - lets put a Tower up there and inform the public"
When an area is decided upon, applications are made for several sites as the chances are that we may win one of them. Currently there are a zillion competitors all wanting sites, so if you go tell every tom, dick and harry where you planning, the chances are you gonna loose out.
Only once everything is signed and sealed and installation has actually started does that site now get added to the list and possible released.
Currently we only have area proposals and no site information, except maybe a few, so if we dont have that information, how can you expect some poor techie to have it.

During Phase I, we had progressed for months and months before the public became aware of what's going on, and by October/November when it hit the news, over 30 Towers were nearing completion in Gauteng alone.
Beta testing only started in December.
So getting back to Phase II, it is where Phase I was in July last year - so give us a break guys.

Heya Pro,

Please understand - I'm not having a go at the technical team at all.

I simply need straight answers. I asked if there is planned coverage for an area and I get told to "wait and see" - that's not an answer. Rather tell me that they are not looking at my area and I can return the modem instead of using it as a door stop OR tell me they are looking into improving coverage in my area - one that is INDICATED as having good coverage already - then at least I have a specific expectation.

It is simple - straight answers help - even if they are not the answers one wants to hear. This is all I wanted, sadly no one seems willing to commit - at the moment this is an exercise in finding the biggest cheese available and asked pointed questions.

From my posts I may seam unreasonable - this is not the case, I actually normally end up on the receiving side of customers complaints - difference is I make every effort to provide straight answers.

Regards,

R

well, i have according to "mysignal" 0% signal, but here i am , connected , it failed on the first dialup attempt, second one was fine

ProAsm, makes sense what you are talking about.
It still doesnt help the people who has been loyal to sentech and has spoken praise to others, and has been driving arounde with a modem in the last 2 months testing if other people have signal, to hold their head high with hope when we have to fight all the time to get ourselves going and fight running battles week after week and get shafted by every change that is made by some tower.

I am a positive person, but this problem about connectivity started with telkom's weak service, and now i am getting weak signal. Phoning sentech everyday is not an option(because this IS their problem in the end, not antenna people or anyone else's, On the site is says i should get signal, and i dont) , I dont have the option of using a landline from home.

I must agree Tad.

I've been pro MyWireless from the start. I was happy with the service - very happy.
[V]Sadly things change[V]

At least I am able to help a few others get their signals sorted. while this is very "altruistic" it does not satisfy my need for BANDWIDTH [:D][:D]

I'm glad to hear you're online though. If I recall you said you're in Douglasdale ? Have you tried looking at Tower22 or Tower102 ?

They may give you coverage.
