Am trying to get http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_African_English to open to compare the two languages. According to google, Sepedi does not even have a wikipedia entry.

As I remember, our previous government, enforced Afrikaans on its victims till the guavamint took control of the country. Did the previous government oppress 100% of the population, or only 75%?

As far as that debate goes, it is finished. Sepedi is a bad idea, Afrikaans also, to a lesser degree. English should be the main language at any academic institution, as graduates do not stay in South-Africa anyway. Sepedi is not spoken in France, as Jozi would testify to that fact.

Try not to rely so heavily on Wikipedia, while it is a vast and quick resource. it is not always accurate - rule of thumb - just because Wiki says it is so, does not mean it is so - try to verify the facts or find other resources

Otherwise I agree with you, the whole world is moving towards using English as the universal language, or language of business - note the number of english colleges etc in China

On the French topic - even the stubborn, arrogant French have learnt that if you want to do business internationally you have to do it in English, they have swallowed their pride and are now mainly doing business in English

University education should be done in English only - so as to provide graduates with the widest range of possibilities.

Other languages Afrikaans, isiZulu, Xhosa, Sepedi can be taught at home - Mnay confuse language as being part of their culture, customs and beliefs - it is not - it is a means to communicate - your culture, customs and beliefs can remain intact with a proper understanding of english -

Most people in this country are bi or even tri lingual - that can still remain

Ok, let me get this right. A democratically elected Government is referred to as a guavamint, and a system that has been declared a crime against humanity by the UN and other human rights bodies is a Government.

What's your logic behind that blatant direspect?

maybe not a second language, but definitely a third, anyway most South Africans understand Afrikaans because it was forced on people

I cannot remember at anytime in the last 2 decades seeing Black people speaking Afrikaans above English unless in special circumstances.

According to census 2001, 5.3 million people spoke Afrikaans.
I still don't see where you got the 75% from. At the time when the population was at 44 million this would have been 12%...

Ironically 4.2 million of the S A population speak Sepedi. 9.5%....not very far off (in my opinion)

Edit : About second language speakers. I also don't know any black people that can understand Afrikaans let alone speak it...It was discontinued as a forced second language for blacks a while back. I did it up to matric and I don't understand it.

Yes it is blatant disrespect. If you have problem with it, join the ANC and improve it. The current guavamint government is a joke, the previous government were terrible in the atrocities they committed and it is not a laughing matter. What do you suggest I call them instead? I do not want to make a joke out of it, as I have a "race card" collection for every post I ever made here. It would be an injustice towards the people they oppressed to call them anything else.

75% because that is what I head from the ATKV. I remember numbers and the evidence supports that according to Wikipedia. I have in all my 23 years never met a South-African who could not understand Afrikaans. I lived in the Cape and the North-West. I even spoke Afrikaans in other African countries.

I said, people understand Afrikaans, I did not imply they spoke Afrikaans as their 1st language.

Wikipedia often does need citations, but statssa does not open for me at all, my ISP goes poof as the end of the month approaches.

You don't need to understand a language 100% of the time, but the other 36 million people in South-Africa would understand me, rather than if my post were in Sepedi. Face it, Afrikaans is more widely understood than any other official language in South-Africa, other than English. English should be used as the primary language at all institutions. The maid who works in our flats, is an old black woman, who is very caring and loving towards us, we treat her with the same respect as our own mothers. I asked her today what she thinks, she said her children are taught in English and she is happy about it. She also said her 2nd choice for them would be Afrikaans, I insisted it would be Twana but she disagreed because she is a smart woman.

Great, then the Zulus did escape from the previous government, that damn ineffective NP, they did a half-***** job at oppressing the people. I knew the Zulus had no excuse to benefit from AA, as they were not schooled in Afrikaans and had a 1st language Zula teacher. We need to contact the ANC, the Zulus have an unfair advantage.

How many people can and will write their exams in Sepedi? Is it possible to translate all the modern concepts in to Sepedi? Auditing textbooks from SAICA are not even translated to Afrikaans, the textbook used at my varsity, is just written notes in Afrikaans and they left out concepts which did not have the correct Afrikaans equivalent.
