Seriously would someone shed some light?

So after quite some waiting I finally was able to order and recieve my ADSL line for home. I was very surprised when they called me only one day after the estimated time they gave me for the line to be ready and thought there must be something wrong after all it is telkom.

Any ways I got my modem went home and followed the super basic install thing, until it got to the point were your computer is supposed to log onto www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl. this didnt happen. So I tried a million and one things to try get it to work but still nothing.:mad:
I ended up just using the windows thing to make my own broadband internet connection which worked but I could straight away vist any site.

I decided it would probably be important to still verify the account though. After finding the password they were talking about I filled in all the details ext but got a message saying verifyadsl timed out, but its not like the whole page timed out, just that part. But because I was able to go on the internet Iwasn't too phased until I noticed I am getting quite slow download speeds. I have the 4mbps line so that shouldnt be the case.

I then tried to download that speed test thing but when I finish downloading it its some wierd file and I have no freaking idea what to do with it. I read something about a zip file but its not compatible?

Hours later on another computer located in the house I was able to get a little further in that verification processes but it said that I had already been verified but I have no idea at what speeds or whatever.

Please would somone give me any type of advice?

Your line is working, soted.

That file is purposefully nothing, it's simply a large enough file to test the speed at which you can download it at, to give you an indication of your line speed. You cannot do anything with the actual file if you let it download to completion.

Clear your cache, and run the speed test again, look at what kb/s it comes in at, that is your line speed.

line speed = kb/s
line speed = kB/s * 8
 
On your modem or router try see at what speed it connects at under the ADSL section if you have one.

Like mine will tell me 384kbit down and 128kbit (512kb ADSL) up when I type 10.0.0.2 in the IE bar and goto ADSL. (yours may be 10.0.0.1 or something else)

I think that would at least reassure you that you are synch'd at 4mbit. Then your worries about noise and line problems would come in.

were the freak do I get that from??

As far as I know it is admin with no password, but look in the manual.

It is very important that you change this to prevent hacking of your account!

Or it could be:

Admin - username
Epicrouter -password

Like mine...not sure of the caps btw. NB!!!! You must change that password if you get the chance to avoid hackers getting your account details!!!

goto http://www.phenoelit.de/dpl/dpl.html and try find your modem for a default username/password, if you lost the manual. ;)
 
also what download speed should I expect from a 4mbps line? I mean if I download it the speeds wont really mean anything to me if I dont know what its supposed to be...
I'm new to this shiz

I read the instruction manual and nothing..
also is it normal for that instalation cd to not work past the point mine got stuck at?
 
Im not at home at the moment so I cant give you the specific details but I know its the new wireless router that Telkom is giving you if you do self instalation. Its black? I tried to find it on telkom website but no avail?
 
Oh and the noise thing is as follows:

In that ADSL section you will see noise: 10-15db or similar.

The higher the number the better :) so for example if your line is synchronising at 4mbit but you get a low number like 5-10db then you are in trouble. So you would have to downgrade your line to reduce the noise affect to like a 1mbit speed.

This is as much as I gather, apparently Telkom have been going around seldomly to upgrade the exchanges and lines to improve the noise.

What causes the noise im not too sure but its something to do with a barely audible clicking noise from the current generated on the line from other areas connecting or using it, or other factors may cause it as well i guess. Better equipment reduces this "noise".
 
check that URL i posted when you are at home. It's bound to have your router model in it, otherwise google for it. @ 4mbit you can get around 300-400kbyte a sec download I reckon. I have never seen it though.

Bear in mind it also depends on the server or host you are downloading from, so don't trust results until you test a few alternatives.
 
Oh yes!! i remembered something...what ISP you using??.

I know my WebAfrica and my dads WebAfrica account were experiencing really slow speeds last night, at one stage we could hardly dial in. I don't know if it was only WebAfrica or our line but to be sure just test it again today and ask around if things are problematic before you play with settings.

Maybe your settings are ok and it was just a general problem.

I then go to press connect button cuz as you might be able to see it says I am not connected but wont let me?? And could somone tell me where I find this noise thing?

also what would be an average download speed that I would be hoping for with the 4mbps line?
Cuz I just downloaded something at 345kbs? but that sounds wrong to me? but then again its clear I am quite an idiot when it comes to adsl so far...

Oh I also have the mega 100wr wireles router..
plaese any advice?
 
Under WAN settings on your router config page - I'm not sure exactly on the Mega100wr
 
I have the MEGA100WR and was just as noobish if not more than you so do this:

-type 10.0.0.2 in your address bar
-username/password is admin/admin (change it!)
-click the "Setup" tab
-follow the details and put in your username/password provided by the ISP
-Save the changes and the router will reboot
-You don't have to create a new connection with XP if you're connecting with PPPoE
-You're done

Hope it works..
