Searched eg http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=575601 but created new thread as not all my queries were answered by a search. Apologies if I missed answers somrwhere else on forum.

I can watch ALL my stuff on pc and on samsung tv. I use serviio

Yet my sony tv (kdl 32cx520) gives error messages for avi and mkv files etc.
Strangely enough my music mp3 format also doesnt play on the sony tv anymore (may be due to vlc being my music player?).

Any ideas why some video format files dont even show on my sony? Samsung tends to be a dream. Sony connected to access point via bridge. Signal is excellent and fast (about 65mbps normally) and playback smooth.

Solution now is to convert to mp4 but time consuming.

Question:
a) why does serviio not transcode some like mkv?
b) why does sony tv not play mp3 songs as it supports mp3?
c) way to automate conversion of files immediately to mp4?

I tried setting up Serviio a while ago and consulted with the guys at Serviio. They were super helpful and appreciated the interaction because by helping me trouble shoot, it helped them with their development (I sit no help, but my complex setup was). To cut it short, I am sure they will appreciate your asking them for help. By solving your problem, they can improve their product

Update:
Thanks, reference to serviio support made me search through their forum. Although didn't encounter answer specifically I came across a reference to the profiles and reset the serviio sony profile to tv 2011. Can now play mkv and avi files.
Thanks

No serviio works on pc and samsung tv (to be fair 3d and newer). Change in serviio profile of sony tv seems to have made a difference. Will check the remaining file and mp3's tomorrow.
Thanks for feedback :D

Considered plex when I did my initial setup but serviio has free android app and whs 2011 add-in (must reload it) while for plex u had to pay for android app. But if its better and reasonable price I will consider plex.

Well the Media Server part is free if you want to test how it works with the TV.

a) why does serviio not transcode some like mkv?

I have turned off transcoding on my version of serviio and so far I have had no problems with playing any file formats. But I have a dlna enabled blu-ray player that is connected to my network- maybe that's why I don't have problems? Although I have had a problem with some mkv files that don't want to pause or allow me to search during playback. But if I re-encode them with handbrake the problem is solved.

All tvs and bluray players dlna. Can consider turning off transcoding but not sure sony tv can handle it.
Managed to get all to play but yes previously converted mkv and avi to mp4.
