There is no way that you can make it only use 3g. There no setting that does that. I looked myself and you can only set it on dual mode but it wont lock onto 3g. There no way you can set it that it only uses 3g.

Yip it sux.

Not sure if this will help

I have a Nokia N80 and you can force it to use the 3G (UMTS) network service only.

See if you have the following menu options:
MENU, TOOLS, SETTINGS, NETWORK.
Then you enter into NETWORK MODE.
Here you can choose between Dual Mode, UMTS or GSM.

If you don't have these options, perhaps updating your phone's firmware may give them to you.

The N70 is an birlliant phone, but the main reason i chose it was so that I can connect my PC via 3G. I have never been able to connect via 3G on my PC, and even Vodacom says you have to set the 3G cards to 3G only. So, if I knew about the 3G only problem, I would have chosen a different phone.

any news about new firmware perhaps, that will sort this out?

It doesn't help, unfortunately.

With the N70, you only have 2 options: DUAL MODE, and GSM.

What is your firmware version?

type *#0000# to find your version

I know that there is firmware dated to this year.

I picked up my N70 about 2 weeks ago but the firmware is dated to Oct last year

V 2.0539.1.2
19-10-05
RM-84

I think I really need an update

I called Nokia the other day and they said the new firmware is available...only problem is that I have to go all the way to Canal Walk where Nokia's Service Centre is now based.

Settings\Phone\Right Selection Key ... assuming you mean right soft-key
or
Tools\Multimedia key if you mean the little 'o' vodafone key.

Updated my firmware today to ver 5.0609.2.0.1 dated 1/3/06 - had them load the nokia firmware so no more vodafone crap on my N70. Still does not give the option of only selecting 3G - only dual mode and GSM.
Not a prob for me as I don't use 3G on the phone.

seems only Nokia does not have the option as default I have the 6680 and have to use netmonitor but the Motorola V3X and ericssons have a option in the network setting to lock wcdma.

I'd really like to know how to do this for the SE W900i - I can't find anything useful in the settings, the only option seems to be a choice between "GSM" (which I take to mean GPRS-only) or "GSM and 3G", so it seems to suffer from the same idiotic problem as the N70. Foolish thing.

Anyone know how to force 3G for this phone?
