Hi guys

So I am in the process of getting a second TV. I have DSTV connected to the main TV in the lounge (HD PVR). What will I need to get it set up in another room so that both TVs can watch whatever channel they want? Kind of like the old dual-view setup. I'm not up to date with these things.

Thanks!

You have a couple of options. One way is to buy a single view SD decoder and then connect it to the existing dish/LNB and then link it to the existing HD-PVR with a heartbeat cable and then enable extra-view.

The other option (bit more expensive) is to buy another HD-PVR and then connect it the same as above.

Option two is better overall since you will have HD and PVR functionality in both viewing environments.

Thanks mate :)

WRT option 2, how would I connect the decoder? Would it require the DSTV installation guys to come around and do something or how do I go about doing this? I ask because there are two cables from the dish going into the current decoder and that's it. Sorry, not my domain; not sure about these things :)

I installed extra-view myself a while. It wasn't difficult at all. You can buy a quad LNB, send two wires to the one HD-PVR and the other two wires to the other HD-PVR. Then you will have to install a cable between the two decoders for the heartbeat.

PS: Did you ever get the Panasonic Viera LED? I replied to your other thread but no replies yet - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/788889-Panasonic-LED-any-good

I actually have two of these TV's. Got them through an insurance replacement. Only issue I have with them is if it detects an input eg. my Apple TV, it immediately overscans and cuts off about an inch all round. I have to then press the aspect ratio button 4 times to get it back to displaying the full picture. There's no permanent way to fix it and Panasonic have no firmware updates for the TV.

It's really frustrating because every single time I switch on the TV, I have to set the aspect ratio. The previous old LCD LG that was stolen could be set permanently to display the full picture.

I am amazed that anyone could find two DSTV channels that they would want to watch at the same time.

Oh okay, thanks. That's pretty frustrating.

I was very impressed by the unit on display, but decided it can wait until the new year. HiFi Corp had a few on display, maybe check them out?
Not to keen on the Korean domination in SA.

Cool :)

My take on this... get yourself an installer and get your LNB and Xtraview installation and activation properly done. Too many things that can go wrong , especially when "Sorry, not my domain; not sure about these things" :)

Also have a look over here

Yes, because if you replace the LNB you'll have to know how to set it's skew angle. You might think it's as simple as just making it the same angle as the old LNB, but it normally doesn't work out that way, you'll have to "peak" the signal again, and it might just be better if an installer does it with that oscilloscope/spectrometer of his, to maximize the signal quality so your signal doesn't drop out so easily during a rainstorm.

So I found out last night that I can actually just use a DSTV switch and get an Xplora decoder if I want a second TV set up. This will bypass the need to get a smart lnb. Anyone know about this?
