Hi all,

I have a pre-paid option with Webafrica. Some websites I go to have an issue as I dont have a static IP Address. So how do I go about setting up one? Do I need to apply for one, or can I just enter a static IP Address in my tcp/ip settings? Have done a google search...but cant find any info on how a network noob like me can setup one? Someone told me I might have to request one from Webafrica?

Please help! Thanks

Normal ADSL account dont come with static ips, if you want a static ip you must get a uncapped account with a cisco router and thats a few pennies.

Static IP and Dynamic DNS

Do a Google on Dynamic DNS. there are DNS Services who will dynamically update your DNS so that a non static IP will appear to be static. If you give it whirl, let me know, I've been toying with the idea for a while too ..

I've used them for reverse (dynamic) DNS - though I have no idea how they handle the whole IP thing.

I think all you need is to use the transparent proxy, read here:

As I understand, the reverse DNS will give you a static IP, but that is only for people wanting to connect to you. If you connect out, to websites say, it still reports your dynamic IP. Or is that reasoning wrong?

Why would you need a static ip to connect to websites? Is this just normal browsing we are talking about here?

Dyndns.org merely is a tool to help people (or yourself) to connect to your site using an static URL instead of a dynamic IP.

Besides, the service you want to access might change its IP on a daily basis, and the administrator of said service will get a bit iffed if everybody keeps on asking for the public IP.

I dont think theres any way to solve that without getting a cisco router/ uncapped account. You can get a static url which will send ppl to your dynamic ip like what was said above, but when you sending requests out your ip will stll be dynamic. Oh yeah another way might be to use a proxy

You shouldnt require a static ip for normal browsing. Can you perhaps enlighten us to what site this is?

For normal browsing the transparent proxy should work fine, others have reported that it works.

It happened to me a few months back where I'd log into a forum and then a few seconds later it asks me to log in again, very frustrating. But back then I didn't know what the problem was.

What happens is that if no proxy is setup, the transparent proxy might change at anytime, thus giving you "another IP address", and for some reason certain forums don't like that. By manually setting up the proxy it's "forced" to a single IP.

Just got an email from Webafrica. They sent me a bunch of proxy information to use etc. They said it shoud fix the problem. Gonna try it tonight ;) Many thanks!

Hi all,

Just to let you know and anyone who has problems connecting to websites etc (like mysterious log-offs that happen after a minute or 2), adding proxy server details provided by my ISP fixed the problem.

Strangely enough, I was told that surfing might be a bit slower, but it seems to have sped things up a tiny bit :) No complaints here!
