MORE than 60percent of female pupils at Mavalani Secondary School in Giyani, Limpopo, wake up for school from their boyfriends' homes.

The school was in the spotlight last week after 57 pupils were found to be pregnant last month. The youngest pregnant girl is 13 years old.

The school's enrolment stands at 1078 pupils - 382 boys and 696 girls.

Health department spokesperson Cecil Motsepe said a team dispatched last week to the school had discovered that it was normal for pupils to sleep away from home.

Motsepe explained that the majority of pupils, both boys and girls, wake up together and prepare themselves before going to school.

Motsepe said the report also showed that parents had not yet broken the silence around sex-related issues with their teenage children.

Meanwhile, the South African Schools Governing Bodies attributed the scourge of teenage pregnancy at the school to the fact that it was surrounded by a number of taverns.

Provincial chairperson Hitler Morwatshehla said investigations had indicated that pupils from Mavalani drink liquor heavily on Saturdays and Sundays.

"During the research, we discovered that young girls between the ages of 12 and 17 formed the majority of those taking booze on Sundays, a day before school.

"Most of these children became so drunk that they slept half-naked in the streets, making themselves ultimate victims of rape and unprotected sex," Morwatshehla said.

Although learning and teaching was back to normal at the school, principal Meserea Mahungu had not returned to the school since she was suspended by parents on Friday.

This was after angry community members and pupils destroyed the school's property, accusing her of conniving with Sowetan "to tarnish the image of the school".

Provincial education department spokesperson Pat Kgomo said the principal had been advised to stay at home for a while until the situation is conducive for her to go back.

Kgomo said the department will in the meantime engage the community to see to it that learning and teaching continue while parents and the department try to solve the problems plaguing the school.

The SA Council of Educators said yesterday it has set aside five days - from February 14 to 18 - to visit the schools and communities with similar problems in Limpopo.

Sace spokesperson Temba Ndhlovu said the council will meet teachers, parents, pupils and other stakeholders to discuss matters involving the code of professional ethics and to see how the problem facing Mavalani could be overcome.

Where are all the concerned parents that even bother about their offspring in these times ?

Moral decadence in freefall.:erm:

Hey, if you get pregnant the Government will just give you a social grant! unwed motherhood FTW! Viva ANC!

The parents should take responsibility for their under age kids & not allow them to drink & stay over night at their boyfriend/girlfriends placed...

 My mother would have semi-killed me if I asked to even stay over....

How much is that? R250??? What the hell can you buy with R250... I cannot believe that there are stories of girls falling pregnant for the third time hoping to get R750.

Well, they get formula and disposable diapers from the clinic for mahala (so can anyone if you stand in the queue all day long), they clothe the children with "hand-me-down"s that their mother gets from the people she works for (domestic workers) so that money is either spend on the shibeen or some other form of self-pleasure.

Our maid has children that are well into their 20's who still live off of her salary and child support social grant money, they are too lazy to lift their bums and do some work. And no argument or sense is going to convince her (our maid) that this is wrong.
Give money away for free and no one will work for it.

Talking about sex to your children in African culture is a Taboo for most.

What?

Shocking on so many levels.

1. WTF (W= Where) are the parents?!?
2. Why are they destroying the school property and why were they not thrown in JAIL?
3. Why are children so keen to get pregnant?? Is it the GRANT?
4. FACT uneducated people are simple and follow their idols, just maybe does this CULTURE of sleeping around and having 30 kids part of the ZUMA effect?
5. There is NO hope for ANY community like that behaves like that, no matter what race.

If each boy sleeps with a girl that means that 382/696 = 55% of girls sleep with boys not 60%.

There is something wrong in the story as it sounds more like a maths problem.
Calculate if there are 382 boys to 696 girls how many boys have to sleep with 2 girls in the morning if 60% of girls wakeup in their boyfriends home ?

Not specifically African culture - I'd say it's taboo for conservative types in general.

My folks never broached the topic, so I had to learn about it and the repercussions by myself. I was fortunate to have access to a decent education (social workers would talk to us about it during Guidance classes) and a wealth of information. I think that is where the real problem is in many of the poorer areas - a lack of quality education.

I do agree that parents need to start cutting the conservative crap and just talk to their kids. They also need to start getting involved in positively influencing the way their children's schools are run. The aftermath of their inaction is far worse than a few minutes of uncomfortable conversation.

Dude. Their boyfriends ages probably range from 12 - 60 years, and not necessarily in school.

Erm... boyfriends not in the same school, or in school at all?
