My fiance has a serious problem that the doctors cant seem to diagnose. She shakes severely at times that she cannot apply makeup or eat or drink. She is highly embarrassed and refuses to eat because of this when anyone is around, me included. She also at times gets numbness in her hands and legs that cause her to have to litterally drop to her knees... this is not helping with her job as she is a cosmetics consultant at Dischem. Anyone have any idea or comments on this?

If it's not a physical condition then sounds like an anxiety disorder, I have constant trembling in social situations because of my Social Anxiety Disorder. Best to get an assesment done, accept it and work throught it.

She has been to 2 different docs, one of which did some bloodwork and found she had extremely high iron levels, medication was prescribed and the numbness is far better but not completely gone. As for anxiety i think it is very possible, she goes insane with worry everytime she has to drive somewhere for fear of getting lost even with the gps i bought her. Her shakes do subside substantially when i am around her

Well is she actually anxious or suffering other symptoms associated with anxiety?

Could be a problem with fine motor skill .How is her coordination and over all muscle strength? Does it happen with other activities like writing, using keys, cooking etc.

This sounds pretty typical of an Benign Essential Tremor.

Does the problem alleviate when she has alcohol? I know it sounds odd, but alcohol will temporarily alleviate Essential Tremor. Its an easy way to diagnose it.

If its the case, then the good news is that its not something progressive, and can be controlled with medication. (i was given Beta-Blockers)

Very important to remember that stress will exacerbate any neurological symptoms ten fold. After i realized i was not actually dying from an incurable disease, my stress dissipated and my tremor practically disappeared.

If you are still stressed see a neurologist to get to the bottom of it.

PM me if you want some more info. (i went through this exact thing)

Thank you, i will look into this :)

Beware of misdiagnosing her condition. Nothing worse than having your symptoms put down to anxiety or "it's in your head" when it's not. It will actually cause more anxiety further masking the real problem and reinforcing the misdiagnoses.

Having said that it could well be anxiety but make sure you rule out other conditions first. Go see a Neurologist. Do some research to find a decent one not just some referral from your GP. You'd be amazed what morons pass for specialists.

She struggles with applying makup, using keys, eating with utensils basically any fine motor skill as you say. Her muscle strength at times is lessened due to her constant tiredness

Yes, alcohol does alleviate it, something im not extremely happy about though, since she is tiny (52kgs) and uses alcohol constantly as an excuse to deal with the shaking. She is convinced that there is something seriously wrong and is going to die. Whereabouts are you situated? Could you recommend who to see?

Shakes and numbness in the hands and legs are definitely symptoms of anxiety, maybe she should try a relaxant. I know alcohol often helps a bit.

This is true. My mother had that happen to her recently, had symptoms the doctor said was due to stress. When she went for a second opinion it was diabetes.
