Hi all,

I have a question... If I buy bandwidth, say 1Gb per month over a 1 MBps line, I experience quite good speed over the first Gb. But, when I top up, which I regularly do, I find that the second and particularly the 3rd Gb becomes extremely slow as a result of shaping by my service provider.

I pay the same amount for each Gb, but the quality of service (speed) reduces with each additional Gb I buy. Is this not in contravention of the CPA in terms of the quality of the service being willfully reduced even though I pay the same amount of money? Your opinions, please...

Which ISP does that? Also I don't know if an ISP will shape you based on additional top-ups. The bandwidth you purchased should state whether shaped or unshaped but shaping by itself doesn't have anything to do with your usage but more the entire ISP's or providers usage unless otherwise stated.

As far as I understand, shaping does have to do with usage. I had an uncapped account at Mweb (my previous ISP), and they indicated to me that after 3GB per month they will start shaping... I am with smartvillage now (since 1 April they took over GTS in Midstream)

I had no choice to change - I moved to Midstream, where Telkom does not provide any services. My address is such that I have almost no cellphone reception from any providers, so I could not get a 3G contract. Smartvillage took over GTS (bankrupt) recently, and they provide telephony and Internet access services. My connection is now so slow that I cannot even open news24.com

Looks like you moved only halfway... :D
