I am trying to share a printer between my Vista and my XP machine, and am having no luck.

I have shared the printer on the Vista machine. But when I try find the shared printer on my XP machine, it cannot find it.

When I try connect to my Vista Shares on the XP machine, a login box comes up asking for my username and password. I have no password setup on the Vista machine. So when I type in my username and leave the password blank, this does not work.

Also I see when I go see the printer shared settings on the Vista machine, it says the printer is shared but is password protected.

Is there anyway to disable the password protected on the Vista printer share? This seems to be causing the problem. Or is there something else I might be doing wrong?

there is a place where u can put the completely useless yet very annoying password protection crap of Vista off.

under network and sharing center there is password protected sharing. switch that off.

its not you, its microsoft...

Assuming the machines are not on a domain, you have to have the same Windows account on both machines with the same password. Then check your group policy settings (gpedit.msc) and ensure that local users are authenticating as themselves and not as guest (Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options > Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts). Also set the permissions on your printer to allow full access to the Authenticated Users group.
