Sharing my internet connection over ssl

Greetings folks,

So I am a bit of a network noob. My gf has a 384k line at home with a 6gig cap which her sister insists on using up as soon as she possibly can. What I want to do is to allow her to tunnel to my home pc (or better router) and use my internet connection when she runs out of cap. I did this in my uni days using putty. I was wondering though:

1) If I did this at home how secure it will be?
2) I have a decent firewall (ESET) and have to approve incoming connections. Is this sufficient?
3) Is this even a wise solution?

It can be quite secure. A few key points is to make sure that you use a good, long password and also change the default port from 22 to something else.

You can also force the client to use keys (files) along with a password to login, so even if the password is compromised you'll still need the keys.

EDIT: just remember that since you gf has a 384 line, her sister will be limited to the upload speed of the line (which is 128 i think). So she'll get an extremely slow connection.

Thanks very much for this. I intend for my gf to use her notebook to connect to me so her sister will not have access to me as she will not have the proxy details.

My gosh that is cheap. Living with one's folks though makes things rather hard to change as often they are deeply distrusting of technology. Maybe I can convince her mom to make the change.

Don't change them over,just put the account credentials on her laptop Family can use their acc and GF can use the justsurf happily

Nope. All that has to be on the router is PPPoE passthrough.

Example: My router has my primary account and I have all my spares configured manually on my PCs

Router dependant Most of them have some form of "Passthrough" or "Bridge" somewhere in the config to enable

Yes but this is utilizing the local cap after the international cap is used. Ie. You can still browse locally but not international but the "proxy" is a local pc so it still goes through.
