I'll be honest, I've looked at emigrating for a few years, but my SO is so close to her family, its virtually impossible to convince her to even think about it. Else I would have been in the UK or Canada, years ago.

That is the one thing, beyond myself, keeping me back. Emigrating now would mean going from seeing my parents once a month, to a few times a decade before they ultimately get too old and pass away. I've already dealt with one friend's mom passing away as he was on the plane back into the country for a visit. That was terrible.

If NDZ wins the conference I will start the process of looking at jumping ship but keep certain roots here.

If CR wins and ANC maintains 50%+ in 2019 I would stay so long as certain fundamentals start shaping up.
I am still of the opinion that with the right leadership and vision this country will be amazing.

I agree out of optimism. But looking at reality, there's no coming back from our jobless rate. Given that the population is better educated and angrier than ever, how are we going to solve this? We won't. Something will have to give.

I would question whether the population is better educated actually. Our standards have slipped...

And the anger is from a VERY small but vocal minority of the population.

No, CR being president. NDZ being president is the worst outcome from the elective conference.

Puttin youn hopes on CR is like the Zimbos putting their hopes on Emmerson Mnangagwa. EM was Mugabe's henchman and he is not the lesser of 2 evils. Same with CR. He played "see no evil" with JZ. He is no better than any of them. Sorry to say, the only hope is no ANC, and even then it will take a decade or two to repair what JZ and his cronies did to the economy.

Combine that with wide-spread cellphone-ownership and the dynamics of what it means to be educated is different from what it used to be. I don't think school standards are /as/ important as they were when they were the only information to be processed.

We're now in a position where there are smart people, who know better exists, are forced to live in a shack without a job. The mental health of the situation isn't sustainable. This populist uprising in the west is a harbinger of doom for us.

I'm not putting too much weight on who wins, either way it is still the same party.

No kids, so don't feel an urge to move, but going overseas for opportunities is always a good thing to build experience. I understand if people have kids that they're feeling they should move, more so amongst my white friends. But, when moving I feel that one should go towards something, rather than run away.

Also, I find that the media in most countries is quite toxic, when I read what they write in US, UK, Germany, etc., but I guess bad news sells. I've considered that less news exposure is probably better, since none of what they write is in my control. But I'd make sure I have an exit plan for any and every country, even the good ones.

Living in SA has made us flippen paranoid. Have an exit plan regardless of what country you go to... I agree 100%, just saying that as a country we are paranoid. As the saying goes though "Just because you are paranoid, it doesn't mean they aren't out to get you."

What Havoc said. European education is miles ahead of ours, but motivated South Africans aren't stupid. They're going to run circles around you unless you've upped your game.

Depends on the degree and so on. For example, my standard (non masters) bachelors degree (BSc. Civil Engineering from UCT) is seen as superior to any UK based universities standard Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering, by the Institute of Civil Engineering in the UK.

Based on my degree level I can apply directly to be a Chartered Engineer, where as someone with a UK bachelors has to apply for the intermediate step of being an Incorporated Engineer and work at that level for a few years before he can register as a Chartered Engineer.

Essentially my degree is seen on par with a UK based Masters degree in Civil Engineering.

I would say he's better than JZ and any of his cronies, if only because he is wealthy enough on his own to not need to pilfer the state coffers for his own gain.

I wouldn't say he is a silver bullet to saving the country, but he is possibly a step in that direction.

I am a member of the ICE in the uk, ours is seen as something between masters and bachelors. In SA it is a 4 year degree in the UK they do 3 years of bachelors plus 2 years of masters. When i got to France I have to do another 1 year of M2 to be acceptable in the system.

In terms of quality, South Africans are much more practical and take experimental results more seriously. The Frenchies and UK guys have lots of indepth mathematical knowledge, but at times cant interpret experimental data. This is just my experience

As others have said, my touchstone is this month's ANC conference. Although I don't have much confidence in any ANC government, if ND-MiniZuma is going to be the next president then there really is no return from the abyss.

I am in the same boat as others in that my wife has deep roots here and is reluctant to leave. However even she is starting to realise that if NDZ comes in we are going to end up worse than Zim.

Same with my wife but all the recent racist rhetoric spewing from the ANC, trying to remove private health care and private schools, that's the government sector. In the private sector, somewhere between the news of raping 3 month old babies and cannibal's the switch has flipped.

Nothing good will happen in the next 40 years.

If I had intentions of emigrating, I would wait it out till after 2019 elections. Maybe I am being optimistic but I feel that will be the turning point we've been yearning for. State capture's tentacles are being pruned and No.1 is facing a decision on the charges, the municipalities are already co-governed by coalitions. So yes the indicators are positive for the near future.

The problem is: No.2 is not much better either. He might be good at testing condoms but that won't comfort the whites. They are already getting screwed BIG time

I agree. In SA, whites will be completely screwed if NDZ takes over. She will have to implement very harsh, so called 'AffirmativeAction' policies. Land expropriation without compensation .... and all that 'smart' ideas ....
