This is my first porst so please go easy on me:)
I'm have moved to the UK and I want to ship over the desktop that I built over. I just wanted to find out from people on the forum if this is a good idea or should I just build a new machine over here. Here are the specs if it helps anyone:

Intel DH67CL Motherboard
I5 3570K, 3.40GHZ, 6MB Cache
Gigabyte GeForce Graphics Card GT4301GB 128Bit GDDR3 PCI-E

The HDD'S I took with me so no worries about that.

If anyone could help it would be great, thanks in advance.

I am also curious as i may be going overseas in September and would like to take my gaming pc with me.

I would have taken just the motherboard and the graphics card with as carry on luggage when you left SA, if it was that important to you... Then just buy a casing over there... No need to haul a mostly empty cheap metal box with.

But as it sounds like you are already in the UK, just buy and build a new one there.

basically this, get someone to strip your box and only send the MB, RAM and graphics. Buy a BOX an PSU there.

Don't waste your time shipping it over. See if you can get someone you know to sell it and send you the money or something like that.

i suggest getting a quote from a courier company and then check the cost of buying a machine of the same spec that side , and then you know more or less where you stand

Cost wise replace and the components could also do with a refresh.

sell and repurchase that side. faster and cheaper

Desktop PC = Heavy and big. Much, MUCH cheaper to buy a new one over there.

As in it would probably cost several times more to ship it over than buy a far better machine there.

If it is not going to be used for educational purposes you will also pay import duties on it. when I went to go study in the UK I had my PC shipped. I did not pay duties as it was for educational purposes but in retrospect the amount of money I spent shipping it I could just as well bought a new one.

I was planning on doing as many people had said. Take all the components and leave the case behind. However on the day of my flight, someone smashed into the back of my car. This was not my fault (have a dash cam ) so everything went downhill from there. I was lucky to make the flight. Anyway look I should have done it the day before but it's done now. There were empty seats on the plane so I could have put the motherboard in the overhead compartment:/ So I'm really annoyed with myself about the whole thing to put it mildly. I was considering shipping it because I have other things that I left that my family will send me. I could always have it disassembled as I always keep the mobo box and any ESD bags.

I thought about that myself. What I have been told and what I have been able to read on the HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs) website is that because they are personal good I should'nt have to pay anything. I just need to fill in a stupid form about the goods.

Take it apart, leave the case in ZA and bubblewrap the hell out of everything along with something stiff to make sure it doesn't get bent.

I sent my PC as is...got completely trashed....pretty much nothing survived - except the SSD and HDD.

Oh and make sure its insured for damage...

What I would reccomend someone wanting to do the same thing is to:

Disasemble your rig and take the stuff you want and either put it in your case or you can sneak it onto the plane with you.

If you are worried about the X-ray operators stealing things out your bag at OR Tambo Itl you don't need to worry. The first layer of screening is automatic as far as I understand there is no operator involved. If you bag fails this then it goes for the second layer of screening which does involve human operators. These operators are physically seperate from the check in bags and they cannot identify your bags, which conveyor its on ect. In the control room the operators are not allowed to have cellphones, the only phone in the room is a landline phone pre-configured with speed dial numbers. Layer 3 screening and up is another story. It's the baggage handlers that are the issue. Secure your bag with a luggage strap that you can buy from a luggage shop or from dis chem. The cling wrap that is done at the airport they will just cut off.

Duties are your last concern, they would probably not bother. Unless you are coming back here fo a holiday or know of someone that's coming over I would not bother, just build a new rig over there as you can pick up some great specials if patient.

It's going to be cheaper to buy a new one. If you ship you're going to have to pay per kg. Aswell as insurance and all that stuff
