Shopping for a new Bed

sorry for the thread necro here, but wasnt sure if i should rather open a new thread.

I see a few have mentioned they have dunlopillo beds. I am in need of a new bed now mine is just starting to seriously kill me in the mornings, wake up with a sore hip quite often and every now and then a sore back.

How are these beds? Never heard of them before... but went to dial a bed and when i lay on it, was the best bed in the shop or atleast it felt that way. I guess my question is how good are these beds for long lasting? Also will they withstand the other activities that the bed is used for? bought a bed 3 years ago and feels like its sagging in the middle, might have been caused from other activities..... (it was an optimum bed, whatever crap brand that is).

was looking at this one today

Any advice, thats my budget. R5k

The old Dunlopillo was an awesome mattress but after the factory burnt down in Bloemfontein many many years ago, it was replaced by Vitafoam products under the old brand. Your better off buying Cloud Nine and don't listen to sales guys that diss Cloud Nine in favour of other foam products as they are all commision driven and not customer driven.

Personally I hated selling foam mattresses as I had a lot of complaints about comfort. They are hot, hard and unless you have been recommeneded to sleep on one by a medical doctor, try to avoid them.

You get wonderful innner spring mattresses that give you more support than foam mattress without the discomfort. If you want hard then sleep on the floor.

Look at brands like Restonic as they reinforce vital parts with firm support but will meet your budget.

My best advice is really on how to buy the mattress:

* If it does not bug you, try and take your own pillow with. A pillow will also effect the feel of the mattress and an old sales trick was to use the better pillows on the mattresses we wanted to sell, and the uncomfortable ones we did not want to sell - and this always worked. By taking your own pillow your going to get a consistent feel.

* Find an area that has three bed shops close to each other. Now go into each shop and only look at 5 mattresses. Write them down on paper. Then when you've been to all three shops go through the list and see which 3 you liked the most. Then go and try them out. If you can try and do it the next day.

You will be surprised how much different they will feel the second time. From there on its really easy to decided what you like and only be shopping around will you find a quality mattress within your budget.

* Ask for a mismatch: The best way to slash the cost without the quality is to ask for a mismatch base where they give you a cheaper base thats is usually a different colour or brand.

** I use to be bed salesman and when I get time I help my friends out. I no longer have any interest but the truth. Seriously need to get that FAQ website of mine up and running.

wow thanks for the quick response:)

yea i saw a couple of threads about beds now and your name popped up alot with quite a bit of advice, glad you mentioned to steer away from the dunlopillo beds now, will need to go look at more beds then and must check out the cloud 9 beds then :).

I guess you right about sleeping on a hard bed, i guess i dont want a hard bed as such, just a firm bed. I see some beds have that no roll feature where you wont feel your partner move around etc. Are those reliable or gimmick? It would be great not to disturb her when coming to bed at night or when one of us has a restless night it wont affect the other.

Will definitely take my own pillow in, who cares what other people think of me:P as long as it gives me a better indication then i will give it a go, guess you right with the pillow trick, i did notice some beds had good pillows others not so good.

Pleasure - but it was cut n paste, well most of it. It was from a PM to someone else this morning :)

I have a SERTA Eurotop (do not turn) and I do not feel my wife move that much on it (jokes aside guys ;) ) ... but my previous one was a Restonic with the marvelous middle, and while there was some more movement, I slept just as well on that one.

One of the secrets on the minimal movement is the quality of the base. Our base is a cheap pine divan and its legs are busted so it wobbles everytime I fart, the old base was rock solid and we are sorry we gave it away - made even our R999 cheap spare mattress sleep perfectly (actually, its still my favorite mattress when I sleep alone)

Also factor in your weight when buying a mattress and stay clear of pocket coil/spring in the sub R10K range (that is for another discussion).

Bed bugs live in the material, not in the foam or latex. If you want to see something horrendous, vacuum the bed surface using a nylon as a filter and empty it into a glass dish, then get out a 20X glass. Looks like something from a science fiction movie

Tell me more about this. I bought the entry level simmons which is a pocket coil, thus far I love it, but this statement for obvious reasons can have one worried.

Pocket springs need to be rotated religiously. Simmons use a special label to guide you as to which side you should be sleeping on. You will notice labels at the foot with numbering : 1,5,9 - 2,6,10 - 3,7,11 - 4,8,12 and these indicate the month. So make sure the label with "12" is visible at the foot in December because if the rep walks into your house to assist with a warranty and sees the wrong month, warranty void (This was the official statement of the previous Simmons rep many years back)

Pocket springs are very sensitive to your body weight and your cheaper ones have thresholds as lows as 67kg. For 10kg your over the threshold, the live span is halved. I've seen people wear out a Simmons in under 2 years because of this. Reason why I don't recommend them on the net. This is the number one complaint by customers where the salesman did not mention the weight issue.

which model restonic do you own?

I use to own the Opulence from Dial-A-Bed, it was the cotton based one of the basic mattress - not worth the R3K premium as sleeping on cotton mattress protectors feels the same. Its the model with the marvelous middle.

I now sleep on a firm Serta Euro Top (do-not-turn) and its hard as hell but I prefer plush - its a personal choice. Took a year to soften up enough that it did not feel like cement but zero body impressions or sagging after 3 years and my weight is 100kg.

But the serta is a solid mattress and the brand I've got all my friends to purchase.

Yeah I was told I have to rotate it every month, although I wasn't aware of the numbering, that is interesting. My bodyweight is ~72kg where-as the website says the deluxe version should have a max of 80kg on it.

A year later, and I have skipped a little bit on the rotating, but I am still happy with it. Thanks for the tip about the numbering, will definitely keep it in mind, in the event I do have a problem.

So what bed are 'normal' guys supposed to buy? Buying a bed in a shop sounds like a crock to me, every time I've done it.

I'm a little shy of 80 Kg, but I have many guy friends who mostly sit between around 80 Kg and the hundred-naughties.

I do not consider 80 - 100 Kg to be unusual for an adult 'Western' male.

All of that aside, if one considers that a bed is the majority default choice for regular, Um, 'fun activities', that is definitely more of an impact on a mattress than one small person, asleep.

seems about the same to me and want to go give it a try, almost everyone besides you that i know has recommended serta or sealy.

Wish we were closer to DAB...also looking for a mattrass, and need a specific one as I have Scoliosis, so it means we might have to fork up to 6-10k out! EEEKKK!!!

I also have scoliosis just between my two shoulder blades.

Dunlopillo is again available here in Cape Town. I have Dunlopillo Bluebird that my one kid now uses that I bought in 1992 that is still in perfect condition. I got it after a lower back operation. I have been using hard foam mattresses ever since and it works great. When I now sleep on a softer spring mattress I cannot walk the next day due to severe back pain. No pain whatsoever after sleeping on hard foam mattress. A real problem for me when sleeping away from home.

A few years ago we bought a Sleep Active. A combo memory foam and latex. They have different levels- the more memory foam on top, the higher the price. We bought one of the cheaper ones. About 1/4 of the price of a Tempur. Every night we still can't wait to climb into bed - it is so comfy.

New bed Longetivity - Memory Foam

Thread Renew:
Anyone with experience on Cloud 9 with memory foam, Genesis or Sleep Active.

My story is: i have a bad back and neck (medical conditions).
My current Foam only Cloud 9 (hard) supports my back but not the neck (3k 9 years ago).
My other bed, Forty Winks with Pocket coils, foam and latex is brilliant, but quality is poor. After a year or 2, it gets too soft (imprints) and thereafter my back gives in (though the neck is fine).

So i want to get a firm mattress with bit of memory foam, and a new pillow, but my worry is on the quality of these products. Especially Genesis and Sleep Active as they are fairly new - would it last 10 years without deformation.

And yes, the warranty on beds are all bull - they always find a way to get out of it.
