It seems like selective justice. I see worse violations on a daily basis (reckless turning, extreme speeding, pushing into traffic, offloading in the centre of the road) and no-one even gives these clowns a fine. To be fair they should start with worse offenses and go on down, rather than the opposite. Guess striking taxi drivers blocking traffic or taxi drivers stopping carpool cars are OK.

I heard this type of action would be illegal in say the States, selective law enforcement is not correct.

If the fact that I am paying my TV licence (as required BY LAW), is dumping the country into anarchy and demanding justice for people who don't, then I'll wave you goodbye. I am also that guy that sits patiently in the traffic while while people passes by illegaly on the left, and I stop at STOP signs and red lights and hoot at people who don't. How can following the set rules cause anarchy?

Zero Tolerance is the way to go, however I don't think the current government has the ability or desire to carry it out since half of them would end up in jail.

The road I live in is a residential road, but people use it daily as a thoroughfare to get to work, irritates the **** out of me and my wife, not to mention the arrogant sob's that don’t feel like waiting in the long queue down my road, so they drive all the way up the road on the wrong side of the road. I mean it is crazy. 90% of these idiots are obviously taxi drivers who have no consideration what so ever.

This morning there were to my surprise 3 metro cops waiting on the corner and pulling these idiots over. Was nice to see them actually do something. Problem is they probably wont be back for another 2 months.

I agree PeterCH, locking people up for minor offences is ridiculous. Amazing to think that every other poster in this thread has never broken any law, ever. I think their tunes would change if it was them being locked up for a day for some minor infringement. Like you say PeterCH, the law must be applied fairly, and as long as murderers are set free, there is no reason to selectively target otherwise honest hardworking individuals in a PR stunt designed to "make an example of them". I would have my attorneys draughting a wrongful arrest / abuse of power claim the minute I was released, if I ever found myself in this situation.

As to WHY people were driving in that lane: as usual government is incapable of designing a road suitable for the expected traffic volumes. Why arrest motorists when the simpler, fairer and more sensible solution is to adjust the road markings to make what these "heinous criminals" were doing legal. But obviously the rest of you would rather see people turned into criminals for your own amusement than suggest a reasonable solution to the problem. What's next, convert a stadium to a Roman amphitheatre and feed people to the lions for speeding. Real mature.

1. Are you honestly suggesting that this is an offence that should be punished with jail time? FYI, the amount an offence annoys you is not the determining factor here.
2. There are guidelines for arresting people, when those guidelines are ignored the arrest is illegal.
3. I have built a few roads in my day, so yes, I know how the process works. I also know that the client (government, in this case) is responsible for specifying their requirements. As anyone who has ever built a wendy hut will tell you, an engineer's design is only as good as the clients specification.
4. You giggled gleefully upon hearing that people were subjected to conditions I wouldn't subject my dog to. What does that say about you?

Actually (and ironically), taxi drivers went on a week long strike a few years ago because they felt Metro cops were unfairly harrassing them. I think it's more to do with a lack of manpower. There are hundreds of thousand of taxis...and too few cops. They can't be everywhere at the same time.

Hence the BRT and trying to create alternative means of public transport. Yeah our gov is useless at times but we must be fair with our criticism too.

The cells these people are in are for innocent people, they were kept without/awaiting trial. So should they be raped ? Is that the Africa you want to live in.

I'm all for punished guilty people, but the police are not the custodians of the law. they are mealy a tool the justice system use's to bring people to task.

I do not care if you believe me or not? I will not sleep in jail. And that is why i abide by the law, not too please you.

( the one about detaining the person breaking the law. Is it not up to the police man to decide if he can take you to the holding cell? Just asking. Would like to read the law.)

About 3. Oke i get what you are saying. Still there is not always the space to build the roads to our liking. See England and America traffic is not a third world problem.

I say we in this country has gotten away with driving as we please for too long. We should be happy about things like this.
