Shorter cell deals coming

This is welcome, provided the providers dont try make these options unattractive.

Of course they will be more unattractive materially compared to a 2 year contract.

Either the phones included will be crappier/cheaper/less featured (likely), the added stuff like TVs and laptops not included (likely) and maybe lesser or no free minutes (not likely, since these cost the provider basically nothing to include)

And for a decent phone over say 6 months you will be paying way more!!

But at least the option is there. So if you want a short term contract for a few months to wait for that special phone you have been reading up about so much and really want....I think it is a good thing. If one can get a 12 or 18 month contract, then it will also be good...Much shorter, but better phones.

This is old, Cell C as much as I hate them have been offering 6 month contracts for ages.
There is little point in using one though unless you have a cell that you are intending to use.
Think about it, what kind of subsidy can you expect on a 6 month contract?
Personally I dont think many people will get the contracts.

they should have phoneless contracts .... for people who just want the contract for the postpaid part....

Agreed - provided the handset subsidy is removed 100%. One does not always want a new phone when one's contract is up for renewal.

I would love to have in future the option of a 6 months contract without phone and less the handset subsidy.

This would howver be bad news for Nokia :(

Gotta keep in mind that Icasa has outlawed 24 month contracts, or I remember something of the sort, so when implemented the 24 month torture chamber will be a thing of the past...

I mean, how expensive can it be? In the UK my friend got a E90 for like 40 pounds a month, year contract. And she gets like 500 or 1000 minutes a month any time, and unlimited internet. So lets convert it to Rands: 40 * 15 = 600 ... or 50*15=750...And its a kickass phone. I really think we are getting ripped off....

I really think we are getting ripped off....

Took you long enough to realise :p

Anyway, I don't feel I get ripped off personally though. I think I'm ripping them off hehehe. For a R160pm (R3840 for the 2 years) I got a nice cellphone (Nokia 6234) and nice big TV (74cm Samsung CRT) and DVD/multiformat player and then 120 free offpeak minutes per month. The hardware alone would have cost me R4200 cash at least on its own.

Only recieve calls and smss from work and insurers and all that. Spend the free minutes to phone my friends after hours. Sometimes send a sms or a bit of mxit. Thus I rarely pay anything more than a few rands a month extra.

Work the system, don't let it work you! ;)
