Hi people,

I have a Dell XPS L502X Which has an Nvidia GT525M 1GB DDR3 Graphics card.

The other day I was playing Need for Speed Hot Pursuit on my laptop. While it was loading, the screen flashed and showed a line (almost like a cracked screen line) going from the top left corner of the screen to almost the middle bottom of my screen.

My screen is fine now, its not cracked.

Should I be worried about this? What does it mean?

Thank you :)

I think It should, I have the Intel Core i7 2630QM. As far as antivirus, I have Avast 6 Free Antivirus installed on my computer. Does the antivirus slow down gaming performance?

Probably just a little screen tearing. I seriously would worry about it, just make sure the laptop is plugged in, and is getting enough fresh air.

What I think might be happening is either the graphics chip isn't getting enough juice (might be a little bit of a 'blip' so to speak, and the graphics let a little poo come out), or, more likely, it's getting too hot.

Check temperatures, if they are 'low' (anything over 80 degrees, and you have issues...), then might have just been a little bit of a fanny wobble on the graphics side. If it's not, then don't worry about it.

When the screen flashed, and the line appeared what happened after that?
If you could like crtl+alt+delete/task manager the game, then I guess there should be no problems, but if your computer froze and you had to resort to the power button there could be a problem.

Hot pursuit is a old game, and on i7 processor with 1gig nothing bad should have happened. Check your direct x version and Windows version, Hot Pursuit might not be compatible with the Operating system.

The Line was present For like 3 seconds while it was loading a race. The line doesn't appear again, i have played the game again and it doesn't show the line.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit on my laptop.

What is screen tearing? Does that mean my laptop screen is torn and its on the verge of cracking? How do I see the Temperature of my GPU? I only have the nvidia control panel thing, CPUID doesn't show my graphics card, only the Intel HD 3000 Graphics.

The vertical line is due to an exhaustion of the graphic card at one Instant of Time, this stress related issue is then cached on to the systems memory, meaning it saves the Stress on to the memory at times

Oh okay, at least im not getting any physical damage to my hardware, so must i get like a laptop fan to help the graphics card remain cool or something so the scary line does not appear again?

Check the temps on the graphics card. AFAIK some Dell laptops have issues with heat and their GPU's.

I updated the driver I think 2 weeks ago. I didnt download the driver from dell, I downloaded it from Nvidia (www.geforce.com). If dells have heat issues, I should buy that laptop cooling system.

make one
Piece of perspex. Drill a couple of holes in the middle. Take a old psu fan or go buy one from a pc shop. Mount it to the middle of the perspex where you drilled the vent holes. Fold the perspex in 2 according to the angle you want it. Put your lappy on it and switch on the fan. There you go cheap cooling plate

I have an Inspiron XPS L702x (the 17.3 " 3D version) and i have intermittent issues where the screen turns off or starts flickering during normal use. On the latest driver as well. Even more pronounced when I have a 3G modem in the rear usb port.
