Looking for a small car for my mom to mainly drive but want something that's safe and versatile too.

I was initially looking at the Grand i10 / Picanto class but it has to be automatic and after looking into those they don't have the greatest autos so I decided to look a segment up.

Currently feel like a 2018 Polo Comfortline or Highline is my best bet, other option in the class is the Fiesta which is a bit cheaper but apparently the transmission isn't anywhere as good as the Polos.

Anything else I should be considering, might pop by the dealer tomorrow to go and look.

You won't have it for long and your contribution to the previously disadvantaged will be appreciated. Hopefully your mom comes our unscathed.
Your insurance and requirements will cost you the earth

Why do you want your mom to be hijacked?

Where are you people driving? In Hillbrow?

The car will mainly be driven around Blouberg area, almost always during the day.

Honda Jazz

There isn't a more bulletproof practical car than it.

Will run circles around a Polo for versatility and longevity and great Auto as well.

I had a Polo Highline for myself, not my mom. Loved the car: nice big screen (Android Auto was wired though), 85kw engine variant had enough go, cruise control worked well, DSG gearbox was great, and I’d specced it to the hilt (LED headlights, blindspot monitor and reversing camera were all awesome). Way more car than your mom needs probably, but you know it will keep her safe in an accident.

Jazz options are tough.

Pre 2020 model has a very dated interior.
2020 model has updated interior but it's bad (touch controls for everything, bleh)
Apparently the seats in the Jazz are also not the most comfortable.
The new Fits are much nicer all round but more expensive as they're newer.

Note, that I will also drive the car from time to time. And maybe down the line I would sell my CX-5 and keep the smaller one.

My sister has a little Kia Picanto. I wouldn't mind getting my mom something similar if I had the money. But not sure about Automatic as you mentioned.

Otherwise can't go wrong with Polo. Just too bad they on top of the list for crime syndicates.

I wouldn't get one, they are targeted. Get yourself something else. Not because polo is bad but because you will pay more on insurance, and will have to be very careful over all.

OP, if you do decide to get the Polo, do not get a diesel. Your mom will probably not drive enough for the DPF to regenerate every once in a while, and that just means endless headaches.

Else, the Jazz is a great option. Take your mom with and have her sit in and drive both - she's the one who (mostly) has to live with it. Maybe a Mazda 2 as an option as well?

To all the people who claim the Polo is high-risk... the OP and his mom both live in Cape Town, and they are not really targeted here. Insurance is also average for the segment, if I take my father's 2009 Polo into consideration.
