Should I get a Polo?

Are you saying it's bad value because of its theft risk or because of something else?
I say its bad value because for the same price you get more features in competing cars.
the reverse camera and android auto come as standard in other brand models are add ons in the polo. add in that the market is so saturated that depending on the use case the re-sale value is terrible.
Friend bought his wife one. he bought a 2021 demo model in August 2022.
wanted to sell it in August 2023 and was offered 60K less than book at best no matter where he went. so he opted to sell his Cleo instead and keep the polo.
sure if you keep it for 11 years and barely drive it and take great care of it the re-sale value will be great, but that will be true with any car.
my Brother in law drives a polo. his wife drives a polo GTI.

my issue is not with the polo. or even with VW. but with blind brand loyalty.

Considered the Peugeot 208?

Polo is a good car but you might find your emblem or side mirror etc taken off the car, not so much high-jacked.

What is your actual budget?

Are you recommending a Clio then? Haven't looked at one since 2017 but can see what they offer.

I also have zero brand loyalty if that's what you were assuming. I drive a Mazda myself, I just try to buy good cars.

Personal experience with Renault dealerships are hit and miss. Family still has 2 Renaults in the yard (Clio 4 + Koleos) and they run and drive. Getting parts still an issue though. Would't recommend the Clio personally though but go drive it

Budget is around R200k, flexible by about ~R20k if there is something that makes sense.

I got myself one on the weekend

Honestly I would always recommend a bike.
in terms of what you are looking for I would say look into the brands that are trying to establish a name and grow a customer base. think back to Hundai in 2007. brand was well established but not well liked. then a big push with well priced cars means good value for the consumer. the idea was to get market share so the quality had to be good. KIA did the same thing around 2012 but that happened much faster. Cherry had a similar push in 2021 but that failed because the brand was not reliable enough and had a bad track record. I am not interested enough to know what brand is doing that at the moment so I cant help more, but I think it could be an interesting approach to look at.

Clio 4 is a damn good vehicle and I chose the 1st gen over the Polo 10 years back. The only bad I have to say is blindspots and rear visibility are an issue and parts pricing.

Polo is high theft risk, higher insurance. Not worth it.

Oh really? I wasn't aware.

:p

I'm getting a quote from my broker, will then be able to compare to my CX-5.
  • The source mentions the most common models which are hijacked as: "VW Polo – accounting for 8.6% of reported thefts; Toyota Hilux (6.8%); Toyota Etios (4.8%); Ford ranger (4.9%); Toyota Fortuner (4.6%); and Nissan NP200 (4.2%)." Other has been calculated by Statista.
