Should I get a Polo?

  • The source mentions the most common models which are hijacked as: "VW Polo – accounting for 8.6% of reported thefts; Toyota Hilux (6.8%); Toyota Etios (4.8%); Ford ranger (4.9%); Toyota Fortuner (4.6%); and Nissan NP200 (4.2%)." Other has been calculated by Statista.
Ye, I was joking as this has been mentioned multiple times already.

you ask a question. get valid feedback. and then counter every single one of the same comments saying its not applicable to your use case.
you are in south africa. Crime is a problem. a polo is a massive theft and hijacking risk.
but you have already made up your mind, you are getting the polo no matter what everyone else says. no matter the risk. you want that VW badge because brand loyalty means so much more than logic and sense.
a polo is a bad buy. it has less features for a higher price. because of the branding on it. and when you want to sell it you are going to struggle because they have terrible resale value.

but again, you dont care you already made up your mind. I dont even know why you started the thread.

I mean, who just throws away the Suzuki Baleno because it has a 4 speed auto - does his Mom moonlight at Killarney as a test driver and needs a 6 speed paddle shift DCT or something? I find it quite funny.

He must just buy the Polo already, he's just looking for validation here. I doubt his Mom gives a s*** about whether she gets a Jazz, Baleno, Clio, Mazda 2 or Polo, heck I don't even think he's taking her along to test drive anything but the Polo lol.

My Mom actually specifically stated she's always wanted a Polo, hence why the option is carrying weight. I just want to make sure I'm not missing something else which I was asking for suggestions for alternatives. So far nothing looks quite as good as the Polo.

I'm still waiting for the insurance quote though, so that could mix things up.

first 2 pages I agree. last 2 pages it feels like there is more thought going into it. still leaning into the polo. but hey at least he is not looking at a BMW....

Oh Jazz keep their value. I have actually sold my Jazz for more than I bought them. Very popular cars and very reliable.

The 2018 Yaris is also good.

I wouldnt buy the Korean cars. They call the new Jazz the Fit. The Hybrid Fit fuel consumption is about 3.4l per 100km. But they are more pricey. And yes their Autos are good.

This is the New Jazz which is called the Fit.

Its one amazing car. I like the magic seats. Have moved so much art with it.

I owned the 2006 which I bought for 80k 2nd hand. Sold it for 90k 6 years later.
Bought a 2012 for 105k sold it for 120k 6 years later.
Now I bought the Hybrid.

The 2012 series has big windows, remember to install smash and grab. I bought service parts from Honda 900 bucks for oil etc. Only the spark plugs was more but you replace them soo 100k or more.

Why do you want your mom to be hijacked?
Looking for a small car for my mom to mainly drive but want something that's safe and versatile too.

I was initially looking at the Grand i10 / Picanto class but it has to be automatic and after looking into those they don't have the greatest autos so I decided to look a segment up.

Currently feel like a 2018 Polo Comfortline or Highline is my best bet, other option in the class is the Fiesta which is a bit cheaper but apparently the transmission isn't anywhere as good as the Polos.

Anything else I should be considering, might pop by the dealer tomorrow to go and look.

Everybody is arguing the merits of the car, or the merits of the province (The Cape is safe[r]!!! until it is not).
The fact is that the Polo carries an elevated theft / hijacking risk.
The fact is that he is buying the car for his mom (To help her I presume?)
So why then buy her a vehicle that will place her at an elevated risk (even if near infinitesimally small)?
Forget about the big selling vehicles, there is a marked increase in second hand spares for these, etc.

Just buy something lower profile, but still reliable

Jazz options are tough.

Pre 2020 model has a very dated interior.
2020 model has updated interior but it's bad (touch controls for everything, bleh)
Apparently the seats in the Jazz are also not the most comfortable.
The new Fits are much nicer all round but more expensive as they're newer.
Just buy the Polo. They are great with the DSG gearbox. My mother has changed cars every 4-5 years as long as I can remember until she got her Polo which she doesn't want to sell.

Budget is around R200k, flexible by about ~R20k if there is something that makes sense.
Go drive the Polo. Will give you a decent idea on if the auto will work for you and your Mom. Not much else I'd trust in this price range. Lots of old designs and problematic frenchies
