Should I get a Polo?

A great car but too high risk. I had one, had 5 different attempted hijack attempts. Then sold it.

Consider another vehicle which isn’t so high risk. Especially if you travel alone.

Yes, I know I'm being facetious, but maybe consider this.

From a VW fan, get the Picanto.
My wife drives a Picanto 1.2 auto and I see nothing wrong with the gearbox.
It's economical, reliable and comfortable.
On the long road and in general, DSG is definitely better (Also what I drive) but in traffic, I prefer the auto on the Picanto.

Drove the 1.0 i10 and that was a different story. 250cc makes a world of difference in a small car.

KZN, I pass KwaMashu in the nights coming from Phoenix.
Thanks. That's not something I'm concerned about honestly, I hardly ever go out at night and I live in a pretty safe area. I'd be more concerned about it getting stolen in the shopping center parking lot.

you ask a question. get valid feedback. and then counter every single one of the same comments saying its not applicable to your use case.
you are in south africa. Crime is a problem. a polo is a massive theft and hijacking risk.
but you have already made up your mind, you are getting the polo no matter what everyone else says. no matter the risk. you want that VW badge because brand loyalty means so much more than logic and sense.
a polo is a bad buy. it has less features for a higher price. because of the branding on it. and when you want to sell it you are going to struggle because they have terrible resale value.

but again, you dont care you already made up your mind. I dont even know why you started the thread.

What are you on about?

I'm explaining that not everyone has the same considerations, I'm not concerned about how likely a vehicle will be hijacked because my driving behaviours and location make that risk neglible so I'm not going to exclude an option because of it.

I'm also pretty certain most people saying the Polo is crap have never owned one in their life and are just parroting what they've heard from somebody else.

The Polo is clearly a good car, it's not the best selling car in the segment in SA because it's bad. I've looked at alternatives and nothing suggested so far looks as good as the Polo.

I got my son a Polo in 2014 when he would travel to Stellies from Hermanus where he lived for a few years while studying so the car was all over the WC. He moved to the UK a few months ago so I flogged it to a friend for R80k. Paid R110 for it so not a bad return and a great little car we all used without issue for 9 years.

And I never had the faintest idea until now that a Polo was a hijack risk.

Just get the Polo. Ticks all the boxes. I miss mine dearly.

let me explain it again.
no one here said it was a crap car. I said it was bad value.

and the thing about hijack and theft risk is yes you can mitigate it, but you will always be more likely to be a victim than the Jazz owner is.
you dont PLAN to get your car stolen. you dont PLAN to get hijacked. it happens when you dont expect it. sure you are not driving in a high risk area but you are still driving a high risk car. and that is going to mean that the car is going to be more at risk.

lets put it like this.
Jazz is a 3/10 hijack risk.
Polo is a 8.5/10 hijack risk.
the area is a 1/10 risk.
but one day there is something that makes your mom drive into a 8/10 area. what car do you want her in.

And I never had the faintest idea until now that a Polo was a hijack risk.
The stats don't lie, but you also have to consider that it is the best selling car in its segment basically every year so there are just a ton of them on the road.

Sure, it stands to reason. But it just never crossed my mind.

Are you saying it's bad value because of its theft risk or because of something else?
