Should I get a Polo?

Insurance is a bit steep, just got the quote back.

R770pm for the Highline spec Polo. I can't tell if this will be the final price, but it's ballpark. No tracker required, although it might bring down the premium but then again it would cost extra for the tracker so probably not worth it.

For reference I'm paying R745pm for my 2017 Mazda CX-5.

This is with Discovery Insure.

Even with a good risk profile the Polo will have the highest insurance of all its rivals. I am fairly confident in that.

Good car just somewhat tainted due to...

maybe look at the Havaal/GWM/Cherry things
take them for a test drive go find a few reviews. see how they catch people out with reliability issues after a few months and take that into account.
you never know something like that might just be a decent buy. the Cherry Tiggo is really nice. guy at work picked one up new for R300K so maybe the second hand or demo ones are in your price range.
strong doubt they are reliable though. but it is a brand trying to build a name for itself again.

You won't have it for long and your contribution to the previously disadvantaged will be appreciated. Hopefully your mom comes our unscathed.
Your insurance and requirements will cost you the earth

I wouldn't get one, they are targeted. Get yourself something else. Not because polo is bad but because you will pay more on insurance, and will have to be very careful over all.

Same unsubstantiated BS every time, if you get charged more on insurance for the polo they'd charge you more on whatever else you buy. I even posted my wife's old polo's insurance premium on here a few years ago, cost me less than my corolla back then. And that was with zero excess.

What are you on about?

I'm explaining that not everyone has the same considerations, I'm not concerned about how likely a vehicle will be hijacked because my driving behaviours and location make that risk neglible so I'm not going to exclude an option because of it.

I'm also pretty certain most people saying the Polo is crap have never owned one in their life and are just parroting what they've heard from somebody else.

The Polo is clearly a good car, it's not the best selling car in the segment in SA because it's bad. I've looked at alternatives and nothing suggested so far looks as good as the Polo.

The polo is not too bad a car, especially not if compared to some of the cars in it's segment, it is no longer value for money though in my opinion, current ones are super expensive. My wife bought a late 2010 model in 2013 for R115k with under 100k km on, nowadays a 2 or 3 year old polo is still expensive.

This thing is sht, I had a rental one last year in MP, fck me, even the grand i10 I had after that one was much better. OP, what's your budget? An auto Suzuki Fronx will be well specced and if it's an old person driving the 4 speed won't bother too much. Or a Baleno even.

Okidoki, then I can ignor the majority of insurance companies and their requirements for higher end tracking etc

Also a few years ago yes Corrola was higher on the list but as far as sedans/hatches Polo's are the highest currently.

That's very much risk and area dependent. The same is said for the ranger yet I'm paying R800 odd rand a month to insure one with no excess.

I'm starting to think the Honda Fit is the best choice here.

Only problem is the price and the fact that it's relatively new and therefor not that many on the used market yet. I'm going to maybe wait it out and see if more used Fits start popping up in the market.

Yup, why do you think ma post #8 got so many Likes

The issue is people that love them (many) hold onto them.

To be fair, there are a lot of pre-2021 Fit (aka Jazz) models available but I don't think I'd be happy 3-4 years down the road if I bought a car which already looked dated today. The Fit is a lot more modern looking and should still look the part for a good few years.

It's still a bit out of my intended budget but if I consider it vs the Polo, I'll probably save around R150-200pm on insurance. Over 5 years that could be around R12k and over 10 years it's more like R20k+ in savings on insurance.

I'll see if I have time this week or over the weekend to go test drive one.

Curious if there is any benefit financing a purchase or just paying it all up front.

I have cash in my flexi bond that I can use and taking some money out of that would obviously increase the interest on my bond but I could top that up again relatively quickly. I'm a provisional tax payer but not sure how much tax benefit I could see with a second car - guess I should ask my tax guy.

Dealers get a bonus from the bank if they get a deal on finance, so they often give you more of a discount on the car.
But obviously the customer ends up paying a lot of interest.
